The founders of AMD and our current leaders recognize that our people are our greatest asset and the ultimate source of our competitive advantage. Our company's strength depends on recruiting, growing, and retaining the best talent. With a culture formed around the values of respect for people, integrity, and responsibility, we maintain the highest standards for our workplace. Our goal is to be the employer of choice with a workforce of passionate, innovative, and fully engaged employees.
AMD uses a variety of channels to keep employees informed of operational changes. While there is no minimum timeframe for notifying our employees, we make every effort to inform employees of significant operational changes in a timely manner using the following communications channels:
- AMD’s intranet site—which can be accessed by any AMD employee
- Leadership communication—our leaders consistently cascade communications through their organizations
- Special meetings or webcasts—we utilize an open forum for management to engage employees and respond to questions
Creating an environment that inspires innovation requires fostering creativity and experimentation in the workplace. Innovation happens when people feel free to collaborate, think, act, and solve problems in new and different ways. We believe that by living our Corporate Values, by embracing diversity, and by encouraging a healthy balance of work and family life, the AMD work environment is an innovation engine.
In compliance with applicable laws and regulations, employee policies, processes, and decisions are developed and implemented to promote equal opportunity without regard to age, ancestry, color, marital status, medical condition, mental or physical disability, national origin, race, religion, political and/or third party affiliation, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or veteran status. AMD has a robust process to fully investigate and address all complaints regarding workplace discrimination, and offers its employees a variety of communication channels (including the AMD Alertline, a toll-free, 24-hour hotline that accepts anonymous reports).
We also support our employees with competitive benefits including excellent compensation, health care, employee assistance programs, and more. We know that investing in our people is not only the right thing to do; it is the smart thing to do.
Diversity
At AMD, we believe that workforce diversity and cultural differences are qualities that ultimately enhance creativity and innovation. When our workforce reflects the communities we serve, we can better understand customers’ needs and more quickly anticipate changes in our markets. But no matter the geographic location or personal background, all AMD employees share the core values of respect, integrity, initiative, accountability, and innovation in support of our customers’ success.
AMD has recently increased our focus in this area by creating the new position: Director of Diversity. The overarching goal of this role is to exponentially increase the pace and quality of innovation at AMD, by driving a culture that expects and rewards diversity of thought and inclusive collaboration.
AMD is in the business of rapid innovation for the ultimate benefit of our customers and global end users. To that end, there are two things we recognize:
- The better we understand and mirror the markets we serve, the quicker we can anticipate the rapid-fire changes required from technology
- The more adept we are at information sharing and adopting new ideas, the better we will be at developing relevant, timely, innovative technology products to enable end user experiences
We owe it to ourselves to develop a culture that expects and rewards diversity of thought and inclusive collaboration in order to exponentially increase the quality and pace of innovation at AMD.
How do we define diversity?
Put simply, diversity is the mix of different perspectives, backgrounds and experiences that are held within our global employee workforce. Far beyond race and gender, diversity includes many other attributes like personality, work styles, learning styles, geography, business unit affiliation, seniority and tenure, and the era in which you grew up that can influence your world views and perspectives.
At AMD our goal is to embrace and draw upon our employees’ broad range of backgrounds, skills and perspectives, in order to drive strong, collaborative relationships that drive business success.
What is Inclusion?
If diversity is the mix, inclusion is making the mix work. We believe that building a culture that recognizes and respects the variety of perspectives, backgrounds, skills and experiences of our employees makes AMD a stronger company. Only when every voice is heard will we fully capture the creativity that drives innovation and ultimately business success.
Why Now?
Our positive experience with the AMD Women’s Forum was instrumental in pointing out the need for a Diversity and Inclusion leader at AMD. The Women’s Forum was started in 2009 with the goal of collaboration and building on the contributions of women at AMD. During the past two years, AMD women have worked to benchmark best practices for women in the tech industry, developed several global networking and developmental events, launched a mentoring program specific to high potential women, raised the visibility of women role models within the company, and informed AMD’s leadership on ways to increase the participation of women at all levels of the company.
The strong work by the AMD Women’s Forum illustrated the value for AMD to focus on ALL aspects of diversity and inclusion.
What’s the next step?
AMD has retained the Futurework Institute, a women-owned company with a 20 year history of driving successful diversity and inclusion functions at global companies. Futurework will help AMD through a process of executive interviews, employee focus groups and surveys, which will enable us to better understand our largest areas of challenge and opportunities to establish focus areas for the future.
