AMD in 2011
Once again, AMD is leading the computing industry into exciting new territory – just as we did enabling 64-bit extensions for x86 architecture and declaring the clock speed wars over with the advent of parallel processing. AMD’s unique Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) is perhaps the most important microprocessor advancement in 30 years. AMD kicked off this next era of vivid computing with the launch of the world’s first APUs, a new category of computing aimed at providing better experiences for today’s visual and data-intensive applications. Following our first AMD Fusion APUs, C-Series and E-Series, the AMD A-Series launched in June 2011, promising users something they’ve never experienced before – brilliant HD experiences, all day battery life and supercomputer-class performance able to handle the most demanding apps and multitasking scenarios. With 11 of the world’s top 12 notebook OEMs offering APU-based products, AMD has shipped more than 12 million APUs as of July 2011, including 1 million A-Series APUs and nearly 6 million C- and E-Series APUs. It is the fastest ramping product in company history.
AMD has long been a pioneer in the graphics space, and 2011 is no exception due to the launch of numerous products, including AMD FirePro™ V7900 and V5900 professional graphics cards, as well as the AMD Radeon HD 6670, HD 6570 and the HD 6450. We also launched the world’s fastest discrete mobile graphics processor in the AMD Radeon ™ HD 6990M. More than ever, graphics define the user experience, and AMD is leading the way.
Our priorities this year are to expand our AMD Fusion family of processors, and deliver our newest generation of server platforms and continue leadership in the graphics space. Execution against these priorities, combined with strong customer and partner relationships will enable us to rapidly grow with continued strong financial performance and increased shareholder value.
AMD has delivered a top-to-bottom portfolio of platforms and products to meet the needs of today's users, including:
- Shipped more than 12 million APUs to date, including 1 million A-Series APUs and nearly 6 million C- and E-Series APUs in Q2 2011 alone
- In less than one year since their introduction, APU shipments have reached 70% of AMD’s total mobile AMD business and have been selected as the processor of choice in more than 150 computing designs from the world’s leading manufacturers
- 11 of the world’s top 12 notebook OEMS are shipping APU-based products
- AMD Fusion APUs received the 2011 Best Choice of Computex Taipei Award and 20 reviewer awards to-date
- Powered more of the world’s top 50 supercomputers than any other processor vendor, as measured by the November 2010 Top 500 super computer site list (www.top500.org).
- Designed the world’s first server platform specifically for cloud and hyperscale data centers: the AMD Opteron™ 4000 Series, featuring the industry’s lowest thermal design power-per-core x86 server processor
- AMD A-Series APU has secured more than 150 notebook and desktop design wins across leading PC manufacturers and more than 50 leading applications now accelerated by AMD Fusion APUs
- Held the inaugural AMD Fusion Developer Summit (AFDS) with approximately 700 developers, academics and emerging innovators in attendance
- AMD graphics today power two of the three current-generation game consoles – with approximately 130 million game consoles are expected to ship over the next 3 years
- Introduced Fusion system architecture in order to recognize the benefits of a standards-based approach to heterogeneous computing – enabling alliances that reach beyond traditional hardware barriers, allowing AMD to grow within an expanding ecosystem inside and outside of x86 computing
In sum, we have unmatched assets starting with the strongest combination of x86 and graphics technology in the world a business model now much more attuned to embrace industry shifts and a loyal and expanding group of customers and partners. Now is the time for AMD to succeed!
