Know your benchmarks – and what they measure

PC processor workloads are shifting to demand increasing levels of performance. Graphics processing and compute tasks -- from streaming business media, online meetings, crunching and visualizing data, and interacting with embedded media -- rely not just on the CPU but demand robust resources from the GPU for productivity. 

Unfortunately, no single benchmark measures all aspects of modern processors. However, some provide a more complete picture.

Industry-standard performance benchmarks generally fall into three categories: Application Tests, Benchmark Software and Specific Single application or function benchmark.

Reliable benchmarks ideally meet the following criteria: unbiased, relevant, involve the entire platform, transparent, and anticipate upcoming technology. Ideally, reliable benchmarking processes are always open to scrutiny.

  • Does not rest heavily on any one processor or system component
  • Matches how developers actually utilize the platform
Transparent
  • Open and well-defined process
  • Public disclosure of all relevant details
Sufficiently Forward-Looking
  • Enables good and lasting purchasing decisions
  • Tracks industry hardware and software trends
  • Covers leading technologies and new user experiences
