AMD Élan™SC400 Microcontroller Evaluation Board

(Ordering Part Number: ELANSC400EVAL)
A Complete Evaluation, Debugging, and Prototyping System

Elan(TM)SC400 Eval Board

The ÉlanSC400 microcontroller evaluation board provides a common platform for designs based on the AMD ÉlanSC400 microcontroller. This evaluation board features the ÉlanSC400 microcontroller, the latest in a series of E86™ family microcontrollers that utilizes the AMD Systems in Silicon™ design philosophycombining the industry proven Am486® CPU core with a comprehensive set of peripherals in an advanced 0.35 micron process.

The majority of options and features of the ÉlanSC400 microcontroller can be demonstrated using the ÉlanSC400 microcontroller evaluation board. Since there are numerous options and debug features available, this board is a larger form factor than could be achieved with a dedicated set of features. This evaluation board can be used to experiment with design trade-offs, make power measurements, and develop software and firmware for the ÉlanSC400 microcontroller.

E86 FamilyThe ÉlanSC400 microcontroller contains an Am486 CPU core providing up to 33-MHz bus operation, 105-Mbps burst mode, internal PLLs capable of multiplying the clock speed to 100 MHz, and a 16- or 32-bit wide data path. The ÉlanSC400 microcontroller exclusively integrates several standard I/O interfaces which control: one 16550-compatible serial port, one high-speed IrDA device for infrared serial communication, one EPP-compatible parallel port, two PC card slots, ISA bus slots, a matrix keyboard, an XT keyboard, and a 3.3-V VESA local bus. A variety of memory options also complement the ÉlanSC400 CPU, including 3.3-V, 70-ns DRAM SIMMs. All of these features combined offer designers a comprehensive tool for ÉlanSC400 microcontroller evaluation and design prototyping.

The ÉlanSC400 microcontroller evaluation board also offers built-in debugging options for designers. The evaluation board supports a full complement of Super I/O peripheral interfaces (provided on the board for development purposes) that provide an environment more like a desktop PC for development, including: two 16550-compatible serial ports, one IrDA device for infrared serial communication, one IDE hard-disk drive connector, one floppy-disk connector, an AT keyboard controller, and one PS/2-style mouse connector.

The ÉlanSC400 microcontroller evaluation board is shipped with evaluation BIOS¹ from Phoenix Technologies and General Software, which have been configured specifically for the board. The BIOS contains the code that allows the ÉlanSC400 microcontroller evaluation board to function just like a standard AT-compatible PC. The ÉlanSC400 microcontroller evaluation board can boot from standard AT-compatible diskettes and can use AT-compatible displays, display adapters, and keyboards. Each board is shipped with an IGST CyberPro 2010 video card.
