AMD Adds 100-MHz Elan™ Embedded Controller

AUSTIN, TX -- El 5 de Agosto de 1997 --AMD today announced a higher performance member of the Elan™ microcontroller family, the 100-MHz ElanSC400 and SC410. AMD's 32-bit Elan controllers are highly integrated single-chip solutions that combine high performance with low-power requirements and PC/AT compatibility. The microcontrollers are ideally suited for the increasing requirements of a broad range of embedded communications and mobile computing applications.

"Small form-factor desktop NC is a major strategic thrust for Hitachi Software Engineering," said Mr. Shinichi Obara, section manager at Hitachi Software Engineering. "With powerful processing capabilities at a compelling price point, AMD's 100-MHz ElanSC400 is the foundation of choice."

Based on AMD's proven low-voltage Am486® microprocessor core, the ElanSC400 microcontroller integrates virtually all of the peripheral logic required for a PC/AT compatible system onto a single chip in 33-, 66-, and now 100-MHz versions. The processor supports DOS, Windows® CE and other major x86 compatible real-time operating systems.

"Wyse chose AMD's 100-MHz ElanSC400 processor for integration into our midrange line of cutting-edge Winterm devices to offer users a cost effective and viable choice for their computing needs."

The ElanSC400 microcontroller features an integrated power management unit (PMU), five-phase lock loops which generate all system clocks from a 32-Khz watch crystal, and fully static design for maximum battery life.

In addition to power management, PC/AT and LCD graphics control features, the microcontroller integrates virtually all the common peripherals useful for mobile applications. These features include a serial port, parallel port, real-time clock (RTC), a dual PC card controller, and a matrix keyboard controller. An IrDA (Integrated Infrared) feature supports high-speed wireless communications.

"Single-chip PC/AT compatibility, a host of integrated mobile features and outstanding price/performance will enable SII to continue a legacy of leadership in Japan's vertical Handheld market," said Yasuo Sakami, manager of Seiko Instruments Inc.'s Information Systems Division 1.

AMD's E86TM family of x86 compatible embedded processors and controllers, including the Elan Family, leverage industry-wide familiarity with x86 code and the broad availability of mature design tools to provide a significant time to market advantage over competing architectures. Because of the long life cycles required by embedded applications, AMD is committed to long-term product availability and support.

Price/Availability
AMD's ElanSC400 and SC410 100-MHz microcontrollers are currently sampling and are scheduled for production in Q4 1997. Contact an AMD sales office to schedule an evaluation board-based demonstration. All ÉlanSC400/SC410 speed grades are shipped in a 292-ball grid array (BGA) package. The 100MHz devices are priced per unit at $55.65 and $51.33 respectively in quantities of 10,000 through distribution.
