AMD Donates Life-Saving Van To American Red Cross

Mobile Training Unit will help reach outlying counties with life-saving courses, presentations

Austin, Texas -- El 29 de Marzo de 2002 --The American Red Cross of Central Texas now has a “classroom on wheels” to reach outlying counties with life-saving courses, thanks to a grant provided by Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. The Mobile Training Unit is equipped with materials necessary for instruction in CPR, First Aid, Lifeguarding, as well as Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training, the machine that jump-starts hearts.

The Mobile Training Unit will be available for viewing Tuesday, April 2 at 11:00 a.m. at the American Red Cross of Central Texas, 2218 Pershing Dr. Representatives from AMD and the Red Cross will be on hand to show the vehicle and give AED demonstrations.

In addition to Hays, Travis and Williamson counties, the local Red Cross serves six other counties, including Bastrop, Burnet, Caldwell, Lee, Llano and Milam. The Mobile Training Unit will help bring life-saving courses such as CPR into counties that are miles away from Red Cross headquarters in Austin.

“It is extremely vital that Red Cross services are available in all of our Chapter’s jurisdiction,” said Denise Blok, Health and Safety Services Director at the local Chapter. “AMD’s generous grant helps us to facilitate outreach in targeted areas outside of the Austin area, ensuring that people in outlying counties are able to become trained.“

“The American Red Cross exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism in this country,” said Allyson Peerman, AMD corporate community affairs manager. “We enthusiastically support the Red Cross’s efforts to keep a well-trained volunteer force ready for any emergency. We believe this new, fully-equipped training vehicle will assist in that effort.”

The AMD grant totals over $30,000 and provides a passenger van as well as the contents to provide instruction: 5 Automated External Defibrillator Trainers
