Enhanced Am486® Microprocessors
Product Brief
Advanced Micro Devices continues its tradition of providing superior price/performance value to the PC marketplace with the addition of the Enhanced Am486 microprocessor family. These CPUs, built around the standard AMD 486 core, incorporate write-back cache and Enhanced power management features. These characteristics make the Enhanced Am486® CPUs the perfect choice for Energy Star-compliant "green" desktop systems and for the growing portable market segment. With clock-tripled performance speeds up to 120 MHz, these 3-V CPUs offer great price/performance value for both desktop and portable computers by providing power management and write-back Enhanced features at no extra premium.

The Enhanced Am486 microprocessors feature Enhanced power management features, including SMM and clock control. These enhancements allow reduced power consumption during system inactivity. The SMM function is implemented with an industry standard two-pin interface. In write-back mode, frequently used data is stored in the high-speed internal cache and accessed continually from within until the data is modified, thus increasing the performance of the CPU.

Features

  • High-performance design with write-back cache
  • Enhanced SMM and clock control
  • AMD's clock-tripled technology
  • 3-V technology for reduced power consumption up to 40%
  • Standard 168-pin PGA package for desktops, 208-pin SQFP for portables

Benefits

  • Write-back cache provides higher performance over write-through cache without the expense of L2 cache. This cost savings is important for portables and entry-level desktop machines.
  • The Enhanced CPUs provide power management features for energy efficient desktop and portable PCs
  • Compatible with Microsoft® Windows®, DOS, OS/2, Novell NetWare, and Unix operating environments
  • Designed for Microsoft® Windows® 95

Product Description

The Enhanced Am486 microprocessor family of products integrates high-performance design techniques with improved cache structure and high on-chip integration. It is binary compatible with all Am486DX2 and Am486DX4 microprocessors. This 3-V core (with 5-V tolerant I/O), Enhanced SMM, and clock control provide lower power consumption for energy efficient "green" desktop designs and longer battery life for portable PCs. The Enhanced Am486DX4-75 and Enhanced Am486DX4-100 CPUs are available in a SQFP package. The Enhanced Am486DX4-100 and the Enhanced Am486DX4-120 CPUs are available in a PGA package.

The Enhanced Am486®DX4-100 microprocessor sets a new standard for entry-level desktop PCs and mainstream portables. 8K write-back cache provides up to 51% increased performance over 486DX2-66 CPUs.

The Enhanced Am486®DX4-120 microprocessor is the world's fastest 486 microprocessor for mainstream desktop PCs. This new microprocessor offers fifth-generation (P54C-75) performance at a fourth-generation price.
