AMD And STMicroelectronics Collaborate To Help Deliver Enhanced Digital Entertainment Experiences

Merging TV content with rich, interactive applications generated by PCs makes TV more personal and engaging

GENEVA and SUNNYVALE, Calif -- 4th January 2006 --AMD (NYSE: AMD) and STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) today announced their commitment to bring immersive, new digital entertainment experiences to televisions. The first step is a network-connected set-top box reference design based on ST’s new STB710x single chip solutions for set-top boxes. This combination is designed to deliver a world-class, high-definition (H.264, WM9), cable, satellite, terrestrial, or IP set-top box. When connected to a desktop or notebook PC via a home network, the TV experience can be transformed from traditional and “linear” to a new, interactive experience.

As part of AMD’s digital media vision also announced today, AMD LIVE! will help extend the power and flexibility of the PC. With ST’s new set-top box design, AMD and ST are working together to help enhance consumers’ digital entertainment experiences.

“AMD wants to change the way consumers experience home entertainment,” said Iain Morris, senior vice president, Digital Consumer Media and Pervasive Computing, AMD. “Consumers, retailers and OEMs can benefit from AMD’s collaboration with industry-leading companies like STMicroelectronics to deliver true innovation and outstanding technologies to the home entertainment market. When consumers can utilize the power and flexibility of the PC to enhance their favorite entertainment devices in the home, they prevail with enriched experiences.”

“The power of interactive media experiences on TV is that it puts the viewer in control,” said Christos Lagomichos, corporate vice president and general manager of the Home Entertainment Group, STMicroelectronics. “Media applications running on the PC and delivered via the TV allow consumers to select the precise content that suits their mood using a traditional remote control and interact with their shows in ways that make the shows more compelling. STMicroelectronics is committed to working with innovative leaders like AMD to deliver solutions that offer consumers these new, interactive experiences.”
