Q:What is the AMD-K6 Processor?
A:The AMD-K6 processor, designed for high performance running both 16-bit and 32-bit software, delivers performance competitive with the Pentium II and superior to both Pentium with MMX™ and Celeron, for Windows 95 and Windows operating systems and applications. In addition, the processor contains an industry standard, high performance implementation of MMX ™ instruction set enabling a new level of multimedia performance. AMD designed the AMD-K6 processor to fit the low-cost, high-volume Socket 7 infrastructure. The AMD-K6 processor family includes the AMD-K6/300, AMD-K6/266, AMD-K6/233, and the AMD-K6/200.

Q:Why should I buy a PC based on the AMD-K6 processor for use at home or in the office?
A:As a smart PC buyer, you want the right system to explore the internet, communicate by e-mail, use your productivity software, give your kids an educational edge, and play the latest computer games. No matter what capabilities you want from your system, the AMD-K6 processor is the smart choice for both performance and price. The AMD-K6 processor brings you:1) better performance for the price, 2) complete Microsoft Windows compatibility, and 3) MMX multimedia enhancement technology.

Q:Why should I buy a PC based on the AMD-K6 processor instead of the Celeron processor?
A:Why take a step backwards with Celeron when you can continue to move forward with AMD-K6? Don't settle for less than the true sixth-generation performance of an AMD-K6 based PC. Systems based on the AMD-K6/266 deliver significantly faster performance than systems based on the Celeron 266 processor, but at a comparable price. In fact, even an AMD-K6/200 based PC delivers better Windows performance than a Celeron 266 based PC!

But don't just take our word for it. Product reviews from leading computer publications such as PC World and ZDNet Deutschland clearly indicate that Celeron 266 performs more like yesterday's fifth generation Pentium processors than today's sixth-generation processors such as the AMD-K6.

Q:How can I purchase an AMD-K6 processor based PC?
A:AMD-K6 processor-based PCs are available from a variety of well-know PC vendors throughout the world. Check out our Where To Buy, for your nearest location.

Q:Why should I care about Socket 7 compatibility?
A:Socket 7 compatibility is a proven commodity in the marketplace. The Slot 1 architecture being pushed by Intel currently offers no performance advantage, and is much more expensive, adding substantially to the overall cost of a PC using the architecture. Because the AMD-K6 is Socket 7 compatible, it gives PC users a cost effective option of upgrading to the AMD-K6 from existing Pentium processors. Additionally, users who purchase a complete PC system based on the AMD-K6 processor, or who upgrade to the AMD-K6 processor, have an ongoing upgrade path as higher-performance versions of the AMD-K6 processor are introduced in the future.

AMD and key industry partners are now developing an enhanced infrastructure called the Super7™ platform. It supercharges the proven Socket 7 platform with the planned addition of Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) capability and a 100-MHz system bus. With the Super7™ initiative and the AMD-K6 family of processors, the future of competitive, sixth-generation PC platforms is wide open for system manufacturers, resellers, and PC users.

Q:What do I need to know about upgrading an older socket 7 system?
A:Due to compatibility issues that are often encountered with new processors in older systems, the most effective upgrade solution consists of the AMD-K6 processor with an AMD recommended motherboard. By replacing the motherboard, you will avoid the numerous BIOS and voltage issues common to other types of processor upgrades. AMD strongly recommends selecting a motherboard from the recommended list in order to ensure proper motherboard support for the AMD-K6 processor. Details on each motherboard, including processor setup information, are included for each board on the recommended list.

Q:Where do I go to get an updated BIOS for my system?
A:BIOS updates are available from the manufacturer of your motherboard. If the motherboard vendor cannot supply the necessary BIOS update, Unicore Software/MR BIOS may have an update for your motherboard.

Q:What are the motherboard setup requirements for the AMD socket 7 processors?
A:Consult the motherboard configuration table for a summary of the motherboard setup requirements for the various AMD socket 7 processors.

Q:Does the AMD-K6 processor execute MMX™ technology to enhance multimedia performance?
A:Yes. To accelerate multimedia performance, the AMD-K6 processor features high-performance, industry standard MMX™. A standard set of 57 MMX instructions, MMX is designed to enable the latest multimedia software - from audio to video to 3D graphics - to run faster on your PC.

Q:Is the AMD-K6 processor compatible with my favorite software?
A:Absolutely. The AMD-K6 processor continues AMD's tradition of compatibility with the installed base of x86 software, as well as all major operating environments, including Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows 3.x, MS-DOS, OS/2, Novell NetWare, Unix and other leading operating systems, and is compatible with applications implementing industry-standard MMX™ instructions.

Q:Does AMD have warranty coverage for AMD Processors?
A:Any warranty covering your AMD processor is provided to you by your point of purchase. See our Warranty Information for more information.
