Micron Technology, Inc., Announces Support for AMD'S Multiprocessing Architecture



BOISE, IDAHO -- 5th June 2001 --Micron Technology, Inc., today announced support of the new AMD Athlon™ MP processor and the AMD-760™ MP multiprocessing chipset using DDR SDRAM memory technology. Because DDR SDRAM is a high-bandwidth and low-latency memory solution and is available in high-density, it is the memory of choice in the AMD-760 MP multiprocessing chipset.

DDR SDRAM also provides significant power savings that is key to systems using large memory arrays, such as servers and workstations. During benchmark tests that Micron performed, DDR SDRAM was found to reduce power consumption by 40% to 50% during memory intensive operations when compared to SDRAM.

Micron is increasing DDR SDRAM output and bringing production costs down, allowing the company to offer DDR SDRAM at price parity with PC133 SDRAM. "DDR SDRAM meets the high-performance memory requirements of the AMD-760 MP chipset and will enable its performance with no increase in memory cost," said Fred Waddel, Director of Sales for the Computing and Consumer Group. "DDR SDRAM offers high-performance, low-cost advantages to server platforms and Micron has worked with AMD and server providers to insure that we are providing DDR SDRAM memory in the best possible form factors for these systems."

"DDR SDRAM memory allows servers and workstations to take full advantage of the outstanding performance of the AMD Athlon MP processor and AMD-760 MP multiprocessing chipset by maximizing data throughput and reducing power consumption", said Rex Meek, director of Hardware Infrastructure Relations for AMD. "Especially in light of Micron's attractive pricing, DDR is becoming the most desirable memory solution for the AMD-760 MP chipset. High-performance at a low-cost -Micron is providing the memory technology needed in today's servers and workstations."

Micron will provide DDR SDRAM modules in two form factors that are advantageous to server and workstation platforms. DDR SDRAM modules in high-density Flat Ball Grid Array (FBGA) packaging will be available in 1GB densities and can provide up to 4GB of memory in mainstream server platforms. Low profile (1.125") registered DIMMs will also be available in 128MB to 512MB densities for internet 1U servers.

About the AMD Athlon™ MP Processor
The AMD Athlon™ MP processor is a seventh-generation x86 processor for high- performance multiprocessing servers and workstations. It takes advantage of AMD's innovative Smart MP technology which features dual point-to-point, high-speed 266MHz system buses designed to provide up to 2.1GB per second per CPU of bus bandwidth in a dual-processor system. Smart MP technology also features an optimized MOESI cache coherency protocol that manages data and memory traffic in a multiprocessing environment. The AMD Athlon MP processor, with stable Socket A infrastructure and support for DDR memory technology, has a high performance full-speed cache with hardware data pre-fetch, an advanced 266MHz front side bus with ECC support, a fully pipelined superscalar floating point engine, and an exclusive L2 Translation Look-aside Buffer (TLB). It also incorporates 3DNow! Professional technology, 52 new instructions that extend 3DNow! technology and enable smoother, richer and more lifelike images, more precise digital audio and an enriched Web experience.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy awarded AMD an ENERGY STAR® Certificate of Recognition for its energy-efficient processors, including the AMD Athlon MP processor. These processors help manufacturers meet stringent ENERGY STAR specifications for a variety of appliances, equipment and other products. Products with the ENERGY STAR label are designed to use less energy, save money and help protect the environment. AMD Athlon MP processors are manufactured using AMD's .18 micron copper process technology at Fab 30 in Dresden, Germany.

About the AMD-760™ MP Chipset
The AMD-760™ MP chipset, is AMD's high performance two-way multiprocessor core logic solution for the AMD Athlon™ MP processor. It consists of two chips-the AMD-762™ system controller, or northbridge, and the AMD-766™ peripheral bus controller, or southbridge. The AMD-760 MP chipset unleashes the power of DDR memory technology, which combines with other sophisticated core logic in data, memory and I/O control as well as system and power management to provide a powerful solution for server and workstation platforms. The AMD-760 MP chipset supports up to two AMD Athlon™ MP processors with a 266MHz front side bus, as well as PC2100 DDR memory and AGP4x graphics.
