Q:Why are the AMD64 processors moving to socket 939?
A:AMD believes in bringing to market customer-centric technology that benefits partners and end users. By offering the AMD Athlon™ 64 processors in a 939-pin package, AMD is enabling performance enhancements and next-generation platform innovations with the use of a cost-effective four-layer circuit board and higher performing unbuffered DDR memory (compared to registered DDR memory in the 940-pin part).

Q:What are the benefits of the AMD Athlon processor 3700+ in a 754-pin package?
A:The AMD Athlon processor 3700+ in a 754-pin package joins model numbers 3000+, 3200+ and 3400+ to provide customers with best-in-class computing for mainstream computing. The 3700+ socket 754-based processor provides:
  • Enhanced performance with HyperTransport™ technology and an integrated DDR memory controller.
  • Superior 32-bit software performance and ready for tomorrow’s 64-bit applications.
  • Large on-die cache memory (1152KB or 640KB total effective cache) for enhanced performance on large memory workloads.

Q:What are the key features and benefits of socket 939-based motherboards?
A:The AMD Athlon 64 processor 939-pin provides:

Performance: Socket 939-based motherboards are designed to provide performance enhancements for AMD Athlon 64 FX and AMD Athlon 64 processor-based systems.
  • Up to 2.2GHz HyperTranport technology providing up to 8.0GB/s of system bandwidth
  • Dual-channel, unbuffered DDR memory providing up to 6.4GB/s of memory bandwidth
Platform innovations: Socket 939-based motherboards are expected to usher in the next-generation of platform innovations like:
  • PCI-Express graphics solutions
  • Cool’n’Quiet™ technology
  • Up to 2.2GHz HyperTranport technology providing up to 8.0GB/s of system bandwidth
  • Dual-channel, unbuffered DDR memory providing up to 6.4GB/s of memory bandwidth
Stable & mature platform infrastructure: With the advent of socket 939-based motherboards, customers will be able to leverage a single-socket infrastructure for the AMD Athlon 64 family of processors.

Q:Why 64-bit on the desktop?
A:Quite simply AMD64 technology brings true customer benefit to the desktop. In his 2005 WinHEC keynote, Bill Gates heralded the rapid approach of 64-bit personal computing. Whether it’s an AMD desktop exclusive feature like Enhanced Virus Protection or Cool’n’Quiet technology, or high-performance 32-bit computing today with the promise of 64-bit computing in the near future, AMD Athlon 64 processors are the right choice.

Today's computer users are savvier, their computers are more powerful and the software simply does more. As a result more and more people are using their computers to do things that used to be considered rather extraordinary — things like digital audio and video content creation, photo and video manipulation, and games with very realistic visual images. That kind of intensive application is not ideal on 32 bits.

Q:What kind of performance does the AMD Athlon 64 processor deliver?
A:The AMD Athlon 64 processor offers leading-edge performance. On 32-bit applications, it can outperform competing PC processors on industry-standard benchmarks. The AMD Athlon 64 FX processor outperforms the AMD Athlon 64 processor as it is designed with more advanced features like higher clock speed, wider memory bandwidth, and larger cache sizes.

AMD expects 64-bit application performance to be even higher. Due to the limited number of desktop 64-bit benchmarks and the lack of competing Windows-compatible 64-bit PC processors, a 64-bit comparison cannot be made at this time.

Q:How does the AMD Athlon 64 processors compare to the AMD Athlon 64 FX processor?
A:AMD expects the AMD Athlon 64 processor to offer leading-edge performance for today’s applications, and we expect it to outperform competing PC processors on industry-standard benchmarks. AMD expects the AMD Athlon 64 FX processor to outperform the AMD Athlon 64 processor as it is designed with more advanced features including higher clock speed. The AMD Athlon 64 FX processor offers the greatest performance on high-performance software and gaming applications. It is simply the best PC processor you can buy.

Q:What kind of Tier 1 support do you have?
A:Since September 2003, more than 60 computer manufacturers and system builders have announced their support for the AMD Athlon 64 processor, including HP, eMachines, Fujitsu-Siemens and Fujitsu Japan.

HP has desktop systems based on the AMD Athlon 64 processor 3400+ available via www.hpshopping.com and through retail kiosks. Fujitsu-Siemens and Fujitsu Japan also have desktop systems available.

Visit the AMD Buyer’s Guide for more information within the U.S. and Canada.

Q:What kind of infrastructure support do you have?
A:Since Sept. 2003, more than 80 infrastructure partners worldwide have announced their support for the AMD Athlon 64 processor family. For the AMD Athlon 64 processor, we have evaluated chipsets from NVIDIA and Via and motherboards from companies such as ABit, ASUS, MSI, Biostar and Gigabyte.
