German Chancellor Angela Merkel Visits AMD Dresden, 24th October 2006
"First of all, Mr. Ruiz, I would like to tell you what the Governor of Saxony already mentioned in his speech: we know very well that your success also depends on fair competition. For public tenders, we are committed to eliminate discrimination - the Federal Government has taken care of it. Everyone who is familiar with your industry understands what I am referring to.
Based on the current public procurement laws, we again published a corresponding explanation for tendering authorities. This document provides sufficient clarity with regard to microprocessors. We believe that this will provide AMD with fair opportunities to compete. Furthermore, not only Saxony but also the Federal Government is active in Brussels to make sure that fair competition is a reality all across Europe.
We have a fundamental interest in having competition in this area. This is difficult enough, as Mr. Milbradt presented. Of course, we have a special interest in this matter, because AMD is such a success story in Dresden, and because we know that such a success story is not possible without fair competition."
