Q:What is new in the AMD Geode LX 800@0.9W processor?
A:The AMD Geode LX 800@0.9W processor is built on an optimized Geode core that provides the best performance per watt in the industry today. Capable of running Windows® XP at under a watt,** it provides performance that will help expand opportunities for developers to create mobile computing and communications devices capable of running Windows XP, XP Embedded and Linux applications.

Q:When will the processor be available?
A:AMD Geode LX 800@0.9W processors are available as of May 23, 2005.

Q:What markets will the AMD Geode LX 800@0.9W processor address?
A:We expect to see the AMD Geode LX 800@0.9W processor in a variety of communications, computing and embedded devices, and expect that with full Windows capabilities at under a watt, it will drive convergence of individual category designs as well as convergence opportunities previously unavailable. We expect to see the AMD Geode LX 800@0.9W processor in:
  • Thin clients
  • IP set-top boxes
  • Routers/FWs
  • Industrial PCs
  • Tablet PCs
  • HDTVs
  • Mobile/µPCs
  • PVR LCD wall displays
  • POS kiosks

Q:What are the main benefits of the AMD Geode LX 800@0.9W?
A:The AMD Geode LX processor is based on the x86 architecture which provides familiar user interfaces and O/S environments and eliminates the need to port software to different cores. The processor consumes very little power (less than one watt CPU core power consumption, <2.1W typical system power consumption) and provides the highest performance per watt available in the market today.

Q:In regards to its features, what are the most notable ones (in terms of its target consumer electronics applications)?
A:The AMD Geode LX processor is based on the x86 architecture, so it will run the thousands of existing software programs developed for the desktop environment. By eliminating the need to port software to run on varying cores, designers save months of development time and consumers enjoy familiar desktop applications on portable devices. Also, the core consumes very little power, which means longer battery life enabling consumers to stay mobile longer.

Q:What are the main benefits of the AMD Geode LX 800@0.9W for electrical engineers and design engineers? What will they find most interesting/relevant?
A:The AMD Geode LX processor is based on the x86 architecture, so no modifications are required to run existing mainstream software applications such as Windows XP, XP Embedded or Linux. This can save development time and expense. Design engineers now have the tools to create new and exciting consumer products. For example, because the processor offers the highest performance per watt available in the industry today, it can run Windows XP on a portable, battery-powered consumer device – such as a tablet-style PC - providing a full desktop computing experience on a battery powered, fanless device.

Thanks to the design of the chip’s architecture, the processor runs cool, meaning no fans or heat sinks are required. And AMD offers a minimum of five years design support.

Q:What companies are AMD going up against in this space? What are the main differences?
A:The main differences are the varying architectures throughout the embedded market (ARM, MIPS, PowerPC) so examples of other companies providing embedded processors include Via, Intel and Freescale. With the Geode LX processor, AMD has brought the x86 architecture to a point that it is truly competitive in terms of performance, power consumption and price.

Q:Are you announcing any design wins at launch?
A:We have been working with 17 beta customers during the testing and feedback phases. However, our customers prefer to announce their products when the design cycle is complete, so we are not providing specifics on customer design wins at launch. We expect to see a variety of AMD Geode LX 800@0.9W processor-based products available on the consumer and commercial markets in the next few months.

Q:How much does it cost?
A:AMD Geode LX 800@0.9W processor and CS5536 companion chip are available at $45 for 10k unit shipments.

Q:What is the associated market commitment with the embedded processor line?
A:The embedded processor market operates differently than the PC market. AMD will provide long term product support for the Geode GX, LX and NX product lines for a minimum of 5 years.

*The AMD Geode LX 800@0.9W processor operates at 500MHz. Model numbers reflect performance as described here: http://www.amd.com/connectivitysolutions/geodelxbenchmark
**A system based on the AMD Geode LX 800@0.9W processor typically requires less than 2.1 watts of power.
