"The powerful combination of Sun and AMD, as envisioned by Scalar Decisions, was able to help us roll out new interactive services to our ever-increasing fan base. The AMD Opteron™ processor-based Sun Fire™ x64 (x86, 64-bit) servers are also ideal for our virtualized environment, allowing us to better manage our servers in an affordable and energy-efficient solution, said Chris Sonnemann, senior project manager, Canadian Football League. "And we can rest easy knowing Scalar, with its exceptional expertise, is managing the system so we can focus on creating new activities for our fans."

Challenge:
  • In order to better connect with Canadian Football League (CFL) fans, the organization wanted to create a more compelling Web site by offering new services such as games, polls and other more interactive offerings.
  • The organization, a firm believer in open source software, also had 10 years’ worth of legacy applications that needed to be migrated to Web-enabled open source applications, which required solutions optimized for open systems.
  • CFL knew its ambitious goals could exceed budget limitations so it sought a virtualization solution to keep costs manageable.
Solution:
  • Toronto-based solution provider Scalar Decisions was selected to design, implement and manage a new, in-house server to establish a re-designed interactive Web site for CFL. Through its membership in AMD’s Commercial Systems Channel Program, Scalar was intimately familiar with the performance-per-watt and energy efficiencies of the AMD Opteron™ processor and Sun Fire™ servers.
  • Scalar implemented a virtualized environment based on two-way (or 2P) AMD Opteron processor-based Sun Fire x64 servers. Because the system is virtualized, Scalar can run multiple operating systems including the Solaris™ 10 Operating System (OS), Microsoft® Windows® and Red Hat® Linux®.
  • AMD PowerNow!™ technology was also a deciding factor as energy consumption is top of mind for Scalar’s Canadian customers.
Impact:
  • The company’s in-house Web server offered CFL fans an interactive site with services such as streaming video, fantasy league play, trivia games, polls and other forms of entertainment. “The league wanted control over content,” said Roger Singh, vice president of technology, Scalar Decisions. “The CFL has been enjoying a strong increase in game attendance and television viewership. Now it’s really using the Web site as a hub for fan interactions with teams.”
  • The architecture can support current 32-bit standard applications as well as new 64-bit applications, providing powerful computing capabilities while helping ensure long-term IT investment for the organization’s hundreds of applications.
  • Since the deployment of the Solaris 10 OS on Sun Fire x64 servers powered by the AMD Opteron processor, the company has had zero security issues.
  • Scalar reports that in addition to a compelling price/performance ratio afforded by the combination of the Solaris 10 OS and the AMD Opteron processor, AMD PowerNow! technology is helping CFL save energy costs. “Performance-per-watt and cooling requirements are top of customers’ minds,” said Paul Kerr, president, Scalar Decisions. “Some of the largest data centers in Canada are now charging by the watt consumed instead of floor space occupied. If this trend continues, customers will continue to embrace energy-saving performance as delivered by the AMD Opteron processor more than ever.”
Organizational Profile

Playing its first documented football game in 1861, the Canadian Football League (CFL) has been growing in popularity ever since. In the last two years, CFL games were delivered to more than 50 million households across 176 countries and in 2004 2.2 million fans attended games — an eight percent increase from the year prior. Challenge

In order to better connect with Canadian Football League (CFL) fans, the organization wanted a more compelling Web site that offered new services such as games, polls and other more interactive offerings. “We wanted an opportunity to connect with every fan individually, and a Web site is perfect for that,” said Chris Sonnemann, senior project manager, CFL, Toronto.

The organization, a firm believer in open source software, also had 10 years’ worth of legacy applications that needed to be migrated to Web-enabled open source applications, which required solutions optimized for open systems. “The CFL believes strongly in open source software,” said Sonnemann. “Over time, we will be converting all of our legacy applications to Web applications based on open source.”

CFL knew its ambitious goals could exceed budget limitations so it sought a virtualization solution. Virtualization is the process of presenting a logical grouping, or subset, of computing resources so they can be accessed in the most optimized configuration possible.

Solution

Toronto-based solution provider Scalar Decisions was selected to design, implement and manage a new, in-house system to establish a re-designed interactive Web site for CFL. Through its membership in AMD’s Commercial Systems Channel Program, Scalar was intimately familiar with the performance, performance-per watt-and energy efficiencies of the AMD Opteron™ processor and Sun Fire™ servers.

Scalar implemented a virtualized environment based on two-way (or 2P) AMD Opteron processor-based Sun Fire x64 servers. Because the system is virtualized, Scalar can run multiple operating systems including the Solaris™ 10 Operating System (OS), Microsoft® Windows® and Red Hat® Linux®. This powerful combination not only powers www.cfl.ca, it also handles the site’s most critical applications such as collecting statistics from all CFL games and updating the site in real-time. Additionally, the system is also running a powerful security program that has resulted in zero breaches since its deployment.

Scalar reported that AMD PowerNow!™ technology, which is found in AMD Opteron processors, was also a deciding factor in the CFL implementation as energy consumption is top of mind for Scalar’s Canadian customers.

Impact

The company’s in-house Web server offers CFL fans a more interactive site with services such as streaming video, fantasy league play, trivia games, polls and other forms of entertainment. “The league wanted more control over content,” said Roger Singh, vice president of technology, Scalar Decisions. “The CFL has been enjoying a strong increase in game attendance and television viewership. Now it’s really using the Web site as a hub for fan interactions with teams.”

The architecture can support current 32-bit standard applications as well as new 64-bit applications, providing powerful computing capabilities while helping ensure long-term IT investment for the organization’s hundreds of applications. “With the AMD Opteron processor, we are architecting for today while not getting locked out of tomorrow,” said Sonnemann.

Since the deployment of the Solaris 10 OS on Sun Fire x64 servers powered by AMD Opteron processors, the company has had zero security issues. “The performance and security of the Solaris 10 OS is optimized for the AMD Opteron processor — a winning combination for Web sites like ours that require strength to support massive amounts of users while keeping our fans’ information secure,” said Sonnemann.

In addition to the compelling price/performance ratio afforded by the AMD Opteron processor, AMD PowerNow! technology is helping CFL save energy costs.

Launched in October 2005, the AMD Commercial Systems Channel Program brings AMD closer to end-user commercial customers and the solutions providers who serve them. While the program offers many of the standard marketing and technical support components, it also includes unique provisions designed to foster collaboration on customer-driven solutions among Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), Value-Added Resellers (VARs), Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Solutions Integrators (SIs) and distributors. AMD’s Access Web portal, (http://channel.amd.com), provides a place where participants may register their commercial solutions and customers may shop for solutions. The portal also offers access to resources and education, white papers and success stories, and channel-specific marketing support, as well as access to the AMD business development team. Field-based channel accounts managers work with regional, national and global providers, including Scalar, to develop customized solutions to address customer pain points and the go-to-market strategies to support them.

Scalar Decisions, an innovative provider of powerful, practical and low-cost technology and consulting services, joined the AMD Commercial Systems Channel Program in November 2005. AMD’s technology complements Scalar’s goal of ‘optimizing IT for business’. According to Scalar President Kerr, energy-efficient technologies are critical to Scalar’s customers and as such AMD PowerNow! technology plays a pivotal role in delivering solutions. Additionally, server consolidation and virtualization are major parts of most projects that Scalar undertakes, according to Kerr. Along with email lifecycle management, consolidation and virtualization will be the focus of Scalar’s efforts in 2006 and AMD will continue to play a critical role in these initiatives.

“The powerful combination of Sun and AMD, as envisioned by Scalar Decisions, was able to help us roll out new interactive services to our ever-increasing fan base. The AMD Opteron processor-based Sun Fire x64 servers are also ideal for our virtualized environment, allowing us to better manage our servers in an affordable and energy-efficient solution. And we can rest easy knowing Scalar, with its exceptional expertise, is managing the system so we can focus on creating new activities for our fans.” — Chris Sonnemann, senior project manager, CFL
