CyberTrader® Looks to AMD to Help Sharpen Its Competitive Edge Through Enhanced Speed, Capacity and Flexibility
프로파일 CyberTrader
"Our challenge is to stay ahead of our clients’ demands in terms of speed, capacity and reliability. To remain competitive, firms must be able to manage exponentially increasing amounts of data and deliver it to clients in the most efficient means possible. With the AMD Opteron™ processor, we believe we have one of the industry’s most rapid, reliable and available systems capable of providing real-time information and trade execution services with the utmost reliability and speed"
Challenge:
-
CyberTrader®, Inc., a Charles Schwab company, is the solution for the most active end of the active trading spectrum. In order to maintain and expand its demanding customer base, CyberTrader strives to provide the industry’s most reliable, available and rapid trading services as any delay in execution could mean the difference between a winning and losing trade.
-
CyberTrader’s system must also be flexible so the company can quickly and easily roll out “in-demand” services to its clients.
-
This level of service is increasingly challenging to maintain, primarily because the amount of market information required to gather, analyze and disseminate to customers has increased exponentially over the last three years—a trend most likely to continue.
Solution:
- After hearing industry buzz surrounding the AMD Opteron™ processor, CyberTrader’s IT team explored the technology. The team identified potential performance gains that could help CyberTrader as it constantly strived and succeeded in delivering superior performance to clients.
- CyberTrader implemented a virtualized environment that combined HP ProLiant® DL385 and DL585 servers.
Impact:
- According to CyberTrader CEO Vincent Phillips, the AMD Opteron processor exceeded CyberTrader’s speed and reliability expectations. “Latency is a serious concern for active traders. The AMD Opteron processor-based HP systems helped reduce each transaction time, which, as a result, has led to better overall execution quality for our clients,” he said.
- AMD64 technology also helped save time in developing and deploying new services. “As our business needs expand, the memory architecture of the AMD Opteron processor has provided us with the agility and scalability we need to support new services and users, which helped alleviate the pressure on our developers,” said Phillips.
Organizational Profile

next-generation market tickers and advanced risk management tools. Its mission is to be an integral part of each trader’s success by providing state-of-the-art technology that is both innovative and easy to use, as well as by creating a community in which traders can learn from each other. Challenge
CyberTrader’s trading platform, CyberTrader Pro, is a sophisticated trading platform that targets active individuals in the top echelon of trading who conduct on average 1,000 trades a year. CyberTrader provides equities, options, and futures trading, as well as strategy testing and risk management. The organization’s clients are self-directed, focused and disciplined. They also require less direct support and trade strategically, employing risk management principles and utilizing advanced tools, analysis and research. In order to maintain and expand this demanding customer base, CyberTrader strives to provide the industry’s most reliable, available and rapid trading services—as seconds delayed in a transaction can mean the difference between a winning and losing trade.
This level of service is increasingly challenging to maintain, largely because the amount of market information required to digest, analyze and disseminate to customers has increased exponentially in the last three years and continues to grow at a rapid rate. Additionally, when options exchanges move from nickel to penny increments there will be another massive explosion of market data, which many firms may simply be unable to process.
As such, CyberTrader required an infrastructure that could deliver competitive levels of speed, reliability and availability. The system also needed to scale to support massive expected growth both in terms of new users and more data. Lastly, CyberTrader required flexibility to more easily roll out new features to its clients, as the company pursued increasingly innovative levels of service for CyberTraders.
Solution
CyberTrader’s IT team began hearing industry buzz surrounding the AMD Opteron™ processor. Eager to embrace innovative technology that could help CyberTrader improve customer service, the company explored the AMD Opteron processor and developed a white paper outlining AMD64 technology’s performance advantages, with particular emphasis on the memory benefits delivered by AMD’s Direct Connect Architecture. “The AMD Opteron processor’s memory performance is stunning,” said Vincent Phillips, CEO, CyberTrader, Inc. “Whether it breathes new life into old boxes or allows us to quickly launch a new project, we have been able to prove time and again why our applications run so well on AMD64 technology.”
CyberTrader implemented a virtualized environment that combined HP ProLiant® DL385 and DL585 servers based on AMD Opteron processors. “AMD’s technology is powerful and has allowed us to consolidate servers and help increase performance and capacity,” said Phillips. “And because our system is a virtualized environment, we can easily roll out new innovative services to our clients without disrupting service of our established applications.”
Phillips elaborated on the virtualized environment: “We are running VMware® which adds a thin layer that we need. VMware running on the AMD Opteron processor has given us amazing resource consolidation results,” he said.
Impact
According to Phillips, the AMD Opteron processor exceeded CyberTrader’s speed and reliability goals. “Latency, in milliseconds, can make a difference in making or losing trades. The AMD Opteron processor-based HP systems typically helped reduce transaction time, which has led to better execution quality and therefore better customer service. Our customers can be assured that they will receive up-to-the minute market information and their transactions are conducted with the utmost urgency and reliability,” said Phillips.
AMD64 technology also helped save time in developing and deploying new services. “As our business needs expand, the memory architecture of the AMD Opteron processor has provided us with the agility and scalability we need to support new services and users,” Phillips added. “The AMD64 memory architecture has changed the way our developers write code, helping us to become more efficient and deliver new services to our customers faster.”
Phillips also recognized the flexibility afforded by the AMD Opteron processor, stating, “The scalability and flexibility of the AMD Opteron processor-based virtualized environment ensures us and our customers that we are ready for whatever new market changes occur. Option exchanges are talking about moving from nickel increments to penny increments and as such there will be another explosion in market data. We believe that when and if a change like that occurs, the AMD Opteron processor will aid in our ability to offer these services to our customers.”
“Our challenge is to stay ahead of our clients’ demands in terms of speed, capacity and reliability. To remain competitive, firms must be able to manage exponentially increasing amounts of data and deliver it to clients in the most efficient means possible. With the AMD Opteron processor, we believe we have one of the industry’s most rapid, reliable and available systems capable of providing real-time information and trade execution services with the utmost reliability and speed.”
