"Performance and stability count in software development, so we use AMD Athlon™ MP processor-based systems."
“We’re all about performance,” said John Perser, director of Engineering Operations for MultiGen-Paradigm Inc., the leading provider of real-time 3D software and customized services for visual and sensor simulation, simulation–based training, urban simulation and 3D GIS visualization.
The exacting and precise demands of real-time 3D visual simulation software development present challenges for hardware and software in terms of balancing frame rate, high-end visual quality and software capability.
Until recently, the industry relied on massive UNIX-based systems for real-time 3D visual simulation applications. Over the past few years, customers in the industry have been migrating to the PC. The PC is satisfying customers’ simulation needs and requirements.
MultiGen-Paradigm wanted an off-the-shelf platform, with leading-edge technology for software development and training.
“We were looking for the highest performing PC platform we could find,” Perser said. “We needed superior overall system performance, which includes the chipset and the graphics pipeline. But we also needed a CPU that was extremely reliable and provided strong floating point performance with low latency. Because our real-time 3D calculations are double precision, that capability allows us to create and display high-resolution visual databases that can span the earth on AMD hardware with optimum performance. That’s a great deal of data.”
“Our customers are specific and demanding when it comes to performance,” Perser continued. “Last year, we began looking for a PC that could provide us with the performance to demonstrate our software running on a Windows®-based platform at a major trade show. We ultimately chose a system powered by AMD Athlon™ MP processors. We ran the software and were impressed with the outstanding performance and quality of the systems. We bought the machines as soon as the show finished. We have since acquired an additional 25 AMD Athlon MP dual-processor workstations for our training facilities.”
MultiGen-Paradigm uses AMD processor-based platforms for software development for a number of their products and for its in-depth training programs. Of course, performance is a crucial element in their choice. So, too, is stability.
“Systems we rely on must be rock solid,” said Perser. “In the back of your mind you always are concerned about possible compatibility issues, but we haven't had any compatibility or reliability issues with AMD Athlon MP processor-based systems. When customers ask us about the performance on the AMD processor-based platform, without hesitation we say we are highly satisfied.”
MultiGen-Paradigm highly anticipates the benefits of next-generation hardware. “Customers always want more realism, and more realism means more content, more detail, more data and more pixels,” Perser said. “Our customers remain performance hungry. That’s why we’re interested in the upcoming AMD Opteron™ processor. As our software addresses our customers’ need to process more and more data and imagery, we’ll be able to use the 64-bit capabilities for greater speed and optimization. We’re looking forward to leveraging even more of the high-performance benefits that real-time visual simulation users need.”
