Using Windows Media Player

Use Windows Media Player to Turn Your AMD-powered PC into a Digital Home Stereo
While you can buy or download a variety of music applications, all Windows® XP-loaded computers ship with the latest version of Windows Media Player, which is a powerful, easy-to-use application.

Playing a CD
Playing an audio CD on your AMD64-based PC is straightforward – insert a disc into the CD drive, and when Windows Media Player launches, click Play. Among other options, you can choose to:
  • Play certain tracks only
  • Listen to all or some tracks out of order or randomly
  • Repeat the CD
  • Learn more about the artist, the album, and even the cover art – if you are connected to the Web
To eject the disc, click Eject on the Play menu.

Importing music from a CD
Importing tracks from CDs, also known as “ripping,” is easy. You can even listen to your CD while importing.
  • Insert the CD into your CD or DVD drive
  • Point to CDs and Devices on the File menu
  • Select Rip Audio CD and click the desired CD drive
  • Choose the tracks you want to rip
  • Click the Rip icon to add the tracks to your Library
  • The tracks appear in subfolders in your My Music folder
Windows Media Player and many other applications offer advanced features that mask imperfections on your CDs, automatically level volumes between tracks and discs, and so on.

Downloading music from the Web
You can use your Internet-connected PC to find and purchase music from online stores, download music from your favorite musicians, and access radio stations around the world.

To download music in Windows Media Player:
  • Click Online Stores on the View menu
  • Click Browse all Online Stores
  • If you prefer one store to all others, select it as your default music source
  • Once you are “in” an online store, you will be guided through the purchasing and downloading process
Windows Media Player displays downloaded music in the All Music category in your Library.

(Please note that Windows Media Player and many other players contain features to help protect your privacy while shopping on the Web. Consult your player’s help guide to learn more.)

Storing your music
You can use your PC as a digital jukebox to organize and play your favorite tunes. Once you start building your Library, Windows Media Player offers many ways to refine your storage and retrieval options:
  • Add or delete columns to customize your view
  • Expand and sort the Artist and Album categories
  • Rate your favorites – or least favorites
  • Create custom playlists
  • Search for what you need
Windows Media Player also offers many options for synchronizing all or part of your Library with another device, such as an MP3 player, so you can enjoy your music on the go.

(Please note, this guide is only an introductory overview. To achieve optimal results, always follow the manufacturer’s instruction manuals for your equipment and software.)
