PowerNow! Dashboard Release Notes (Version 1.0.5)
System Requirements
Operating Systems Supported:
- Windows 98SE
- Windows ME
- Windows 2000 SP1 or Higher
- Windows XP
AMD Athlon or Duron processor with PowerNow! capability. Generally, only laptops
are shipped with PowerNow! capability, with PowerNow! installed/enabled. See the
Enabling PowerNow! section below installing/enabling PowerNow!.
Installation requires 800x600 resolution or higher.
IMPORTANT: The Dashboard is incompatible with PowerTweak. If you have PowerTweak installed, then you must uninstall PowerTweak before installing the Dashboard. Currently, you cannot have them both installed at the same time and have them work.
Enabling PowerNow!
Check whether the PowerNow! software is installed and enabled by going to Power
Options under the Control Panel. If there is a PowerNow! section, then AMD PowerNow!
Software is installed. Use the PowerNow! section to set your PowerNow! settings.
Windows XP:
AMD PowerNow! support is included with Windows XP. This means that under Windows XP the AMD PowerNow! Software should not be installed.
IMPORTANT: As of the current release of Windows XP, you must go to http://www.windowsupdate.com
and download the latest processor driver to enable PowerNow!.
Windows 98SE, ME, and 2000:
Under these operating systems, AMD PowerNow! Software is needed for the system to take advantage of the power-saving capabilities. If you have an AMD Athlon or Duron processor with PowerNow! capability (usually laptops and Small Form Factor machines), check the OEM software which came with your system for the AMD PowerNow! Software for that system, or check directly with the OEM.
Installation
Upon uninstall, there will be a device left in your device manager called “AMD
ChkState Driver”. You may leave this device installed with no hindrance to your
machine, and we recommend that you leave this device installed. If you do wish
to remove this device, go to the Device Manager (under System Properties) and
uninstall the “AMD ChkState Device”. Also, find and delete the files chkstate.sys,
chkstate, pnf, and chkstate.inf from your file system.
Windows 98SE Installation Issue:
On some Windows 98 SE systems, the installation may terminate with the message
"The program has performed an illegal operation." In all cases where we've seen
this happen, the Dashboard still installs correctly. Ignore the error message
and try starting the Dashboard application.
Enabling DMA
Battery Savings and system performance may be increased by making sure that DMA
is enabled.
Depending on the system devices and hardware, DMA may not be an option. This section
is intended to guide you to the common place for checking and enabling DMA. Some
drivers have different windows and panels so please keep that in mind.
Enabling DMA on 98SE and ME:
1.Right Click on My Computer and go to properties. This will bring up System Properties.
2.Go to Device Manager and select 'CDROM' and find DMA settings.
3.Go to Hard Disk controllers and select Primary to enable DMA and then Secondary to enable DMA.
Enabling DMA on WIN2K: (Note: Some drivers have the setting ‘Automatic’, which will auto-detect and set the appropriate DMA settings.)
1.Right Click on My Computer and go to properties. This will bring up System Properties.
2.Go to the Hardware tab and select the Device Manager button.
3.In Device Manager select 'CDROM' and find DMA settings.
4.Go to Hard Disk controllers and select Primary to enable DMA and then Secondary to enable DMA.
Enabling DMA on XP:
In most cases, XP will automatically set the best settings for DMA.
