성공사례 - Layered Technologies

The AMD Opteron™ Processor Helps to Build Brand and Triple Growth for Layered Technologies

"By being the first to introduce new technologies like backwards compatible x86 64-bit computing and dual-core processors, AMD has helped us put our ‘money where our mouth is’. And this has led to our success in maintaining and growing our customer base, says Michael Platner, chief executive officer, Layered Technologies. "

Challenge
  • Layered Technologies is a hosting technology enabler that caters to the self-identified “tech enabler”. As such, the company is tasked to be the first to deliver the most innovative technologies or risk losing an immensely loyal customer base.
  • The company must also deliver exceptional performance, flexibility and cost efficiencies so it is constantly looking for new innovations from vendors like AMD that can help Layered offer competitive and compelling services to its customers.
Solution
  • Layered deployed numerous Single- and Dual-Core AMD Opteron™ processors throughout 60 percent of its infrastructure. “With AMD we can offer a high performance, enterprise-level Internet computing services network and state-of-the-art hardware platforms at a great price,” said Chief Operating Officer and President of Layered Technologies Todd Abrams.
Impact
  • The AMD Opteron processor helped Layered offer unique services like 64-bit backwards compatibility to its customers. As a result, the company has attributed its triple growth and strong brand in part to AMD.
  • The company will also continue to rely on and deploy AMD64 technology to support emerging technology needs like virtualization and the most efficient disaster recovery, as well as complex and heavy usage applications requiring fast processing.
Organizational Profile
Layered Technologies, Inc. is a leading hosting provider of self-managed, dedicated server platforms and services over a superior low latency network. With clients in over 120 countries, Layered Technologies’ custom solutions allow customers of all sizes to rapidly deploy on-demand hosting and utility computing services providing all the controls of co-location, but without the start up costs, the commitments, and inflexibility and deployment challenges.

Challenge
In the competitive world of Managed Service Providers (MSPs), Layered Technologies experienced astounding success as a hosted technology enabler, being among the first to offer the industry’s newest technologies with competitive services and contracts. To continue its success, the company was looking for a company that could deliver the most innovative technologies first, which led Layered to AMD.

Layered Technologies caters to the “tech enabler”; meaning the companies’ customers are often early adopters of the newest and most innovative technologies. As such, Layered is required to offer these services as soon as they are available or risk losing extremely loyal customers. “We live and die by our ‘techies’,” said Todd Abrams, chief operating officer and president, Layered Technologies. “Our business growth has almost exclusively been due to word of mouth. So keeping our customers happy is our number one goal. This means being among the first to offer technologies like backwards compatible 64-bit computing and dual-core processing, and we knew AMD could continue its tradition by being the first to deliver these in-demand innovations.”

The company also needed to continue to offer compelling service and contracts. “We help our customers negotiate their hand shake with the Internet,” said Layered Chief Executive Officer Michael Platner. “Running a business application on the Internet does not have to be about long-term co-location or hosting contracts, management fees, and capital expenditures. Today is all about the speed of your network, how fast you can deploy applications, keeping costs low, providing flexibility and an upgrade path, and removing the management of a large infrastructure.”

To meet these criteria, Layered Technologies provides customers with unique options and levels of service: contracts are much shorter than traditional hosted offerings; the company promises to get a customer up and running within 72 hours; and Layered provides scalable growth so customers can focus on their applications. These traits are especially important for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and seasonal businesses — two markets in which the company retains strong footholds — and in order to sustain and grow these customers, Layered needed to implement competitive technologies.

Solution
In order to meet and beat its customers’ expectations of offering the newest and hottest technologies, Layered Technologies offers a wide variety of Single- and Dual-Core AMD Opteron™ processors. “With AMD we can offer more efficient computing platforms, at a great price,” said Abrams. “AMD helps us meet our customers’ needs of critical flexibility, performance and database efficiency.” “Our company runs 60 percent on AMD processors and as long as AMD continues to innovate, that number will continue to grow,” added Abrams.

Impact
“By being the first to introduce new technologies like backwards compatible 64-bit computing and dual-core processors, AMD has helped us put our ‘money where our mouth is’. This has led to our success in maintaining and growing our customer base,” said Abrams. “AMD’s innovations have been widely embraced by our ‘tech enablers’ and therefore have improved their businesses. As such, AMD has been instrumental in building our brand and tripling our business.”

The company’s customers have experienced significant efficiencies since implementing the AMD Opteron processor. According to Abrams, a major media client was previously using a competitor-based system for memory-intensive database applications and video streaming. But once the company moved to Dual-Core AMD Opteron processors, the system ran much cooler and needed one-half the servers of the previous configuration, translating into dramatically reduced costs.

More customers, such as two leading worldwide blog sites, also experienced benefits of the Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor. Once AMD64 was deployed, both sites were able to support massive usage with a condensed footprint at a lower cost to the customers.

Due to the success Layered has experienced working with AMD Opteron processors, the company is relying on AMD almost exclusively as it delves into new areas of technology for its customers. For example, 99 percent of Virtuozzo, (one of Layered’s virtualization offerings), as well as Layered’s new grid computing solution, is running on AMD Opteron processors due to the exceptional price/performance afforded by AMD64 technology. According to Abrams, the company will continue to invest in AMD as long as the company delivers innovations that are maximized for on-demand technologies like grid and utility computing, and disaster recovery for customers.

“By being the first to introduce new technologies like backwards compatible 64-bit computing and dual-core processors, AMD has helped us put our ‘money where our mouth is’. And this has led to our success in maintaining and growing our customer base. AMD’s innovations have been widely embraced by our ‘tech enablers’ and therefore have improved their businesses. As such, AMD has been instrumental in building our brand and tripling our business.” — Michael Platner, chief executive officer, Layered Technologies
