AMD CTO Fred Weber And AMD64 Design Team Honored As Innovators Of The Year

—EDN Magazine also crowns AMD Athlon™ 64 processor Innovation of the Year—

SUNNYVALE, CA -- El 5 de abril de 2004 --AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced its chief technical officer, Fred Weber, and the AMD64 design team have been awarded EDN Magazine’s Innovator of the Year for a significant advance in technology. The AMD Athlon™ 64 processor was chosen as Innovation of the Year in the processor category.

“Our design team took the evolutionary approach to 64-bit computing,” said Fred Weber, CTO at AMD. “We have enabled pervasive 64-bit computing with 32-bit backward compatibility on the standard x86 PC platform because it benefits the industry and the customer. We then went the extra step to determine additional customer needs, such as HyperTransport™ technology, an on-chip memory controller and features to enhance security and virus protection for the upcoming Windows® Service Pack 2. We thank EDN and its readers for recognizing this achievement in design and the resulting product.”

"Despite a tough economy in 2003, it's clear that the innovative spirit is still flourishing in the electronics industry," said Maury Wright, editor-in-chief of EDN magazine. "The recipients of the EDN Innovation Award represent the best of the best in developing the products and technologies that handle the interface to the analog world, that carry the computational burden for multimedia and communications and that implement test, development, and design for semiconductors and systems via software."

"The 14th annual EDN Innovation Awards is proud to recognize innovations across the entire gamut of technologies that are key to creating products that everyone can enjoy and use. We applaud the engineering profession for creating advancements that put technology to work for people in their everyday lives."

EDN’s technical editors chose finalists from a field of hundreds. EDN staff and readers, an audience of electronics engineers and engineering managers, then selected the ultimate winners.

The AMD Athlon 64 and AMD Opteron™ processor families have been adopted by many leading industry heavyweights as a customer-centric approach to next-generation computing.
