AMD and Virata Collaborate on ADSL Reference Design

Reference Design Provides Turnkey ADSL Solution for Modem Manufacturers

AUSTIN, TX and SANTA CLARA, CA -- El 7 de junio de 1999 --AMD and Virata today announced a reference design kit for the rapid development of Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) customer premises equipment (CPE) devices. The reference design kit is a complete system solution to be offered to manufacturers of external ADSL CPE including modems, routers and gateways. For the design, AMD provides its new Intelligent Access™ ADSL chipset, and Virata provides its Helium chip and software.

The new reference design offers everything an OEM requires to quickly and cost-effectively produce CPE equipment, such as an external modem or gateway device, for the fast-growing ADSL market. In addition to the hardware platform, the reference design kit includes schematics, detailed hardware and software design descriptions, and software object or source code. The reference design kit will be developed for both Ethernet and USB applications.

"AMD and Virata together developed this reference design kit to give OEMs a jumpstart on their ADSL modem designs," said Steve Bretoi, AMD division marketing manager in charge of ADSL CPE products. "Speed to market is critical in the highly competitive and fast-paced consumer market. Our complete system solution provides this time-to-market advantage with very minimal OEM resources required."

"Our goal is to provide a ready-to-manufacture system solution that offers customers maximum flexibility and performance for the lowest possible price," said Doron Hendel, vice president of business development for Virata. "AMD makes an ideal reference design partner for our company to showcase Helium in an ADSL application. This collaboration is a win-win situation not only for us, but for our customers."

The new reference design uses AMD's Intelligent Access AmDSL™ chipset, a two-chip, rate-adaptive, ATM-based ADSL modem solution. The AmDSL chipset includes the AmDSL134 Analog Front End (AFE) and the AmDSL135 DMTtransceiver devices. AMD's system solution can be configured to support both full-rate ADSL and G.Lite, also known as "splitterless" ADSL. The AmDSL chipset is planned to go into production in the third quarter of 1999.

Virata's Helium is a tightly integrated, physical layer controller, ATM SAR and switching, and layer 2/3 processing device. It is designed for use in high-speed, single- and multiple-user endpoint devices such as modems, gateway devices, channel banks and line cards for DSLAMs.

AMD and Virata are offering two versions of the initial reference design--an evaluation kit for benchmarking and testing purposes and a design kit with full hardware and software licenses for manufacturing. The design will be available in several configurations.

Availability and Pricing
The AMD/Virata reference design licenses will be available in object code or source code versions. The reference design is planned to be available July 1999, and will be jointly marketed and sold by both companies. Please contact AMD or Virata for pricing information.
