Sun Microsystems, long considered a thought-leader in 64-bit computing, debuted its Solaris 10 operating system in January 2005. Solaris 10 was engineered with the x86-based AMD64 platform in mind:
- Full 64-bit support for the entire AMD64 processor family
- Optimized to run on AMD Opteron™ processor-based systems
On June 14th, 2005 Sun announced the OpenSolaris Project that offers opened source code. It is also a community and a web site for collaboration, conversation, source, downloads, mailing lists, events and developer tools.
