Q:Why did AMD acquire the Information Appliance (IA) Division of National Semiconductor?
A:AMD’s acquisition of the IA division of National Semiconductor extends our commitment to x86 from embedded appliances to high-end servers.

The acquisition allows AMD to offer the Geode™ product line into the embedded processor markets including the thin client, smart display and set-top box markets. The Geode product family includes an integrated silicon and system solution set designed with embedded x86 processors optimized for power and performance.


Q:What types of products/technologies has the IA division developed?
A:The IA Division of National Semiconductor has been dedicated to designing and developing low power x86-based systems-on-a-chip (SOCs) and was previously a division of Cyrix that National acquired in 1999.

The products include:
  • GX Processors and Companion Chips
    • GX1 - Low Power Integrated x86 Processor
      • CS5530A – Multi-Function South Bridge
    • GX2 - Integrated Processor
      • CS5535 – I/O Companion
  • Geode IA-On-A-Chip Device Applications
    • SC1100 - Advanced set-top box, consumer access device, residential gateway, thin client, or embedded system.
    • SC1200/1201 - Set-Top Box Applications
    • SC2200 - Thin-Client desktop computing
    • SC3200 - Personal Access Devices that automatically connect to the Web when powered up, allowing users to be on the Internet in less than a minute and for use in Residential Gateway applications
