When champion cyclist Lance Armstrong was diagnosed with cancer at 25, he decided to fight back with every tool at his disposal. He relied on technology — the power of computing and the in-depth resources of the Internet — to arm himself with a deep understanding of his diagnosis and treatment options. This information led Lance to a strategy for taking cancer head on, and surviving the disease.
The rest is history.
Founded in 1969, AMD applies powerful technology to address some of the world's most difficult problems. AMD commissioned a survey among the cancer community and today joins with the LAF to discover innovative ways to use the latest technologies to help cancer survivors live longer, stronger, and healthier lives.
Our shared goals are simple:
- Reduce suffering and death caused by cancer.
- Empower patients, caregivers, medical professionals, researchers, and others affected by cancer to move forward — little by little, day by day.

Unity is strength. Knowledge is power. Attitude is everything.
Research: Bridging the Gap
AMD and LAF talked to 550 cancer patients and professionals to understand how they're using technology. The results identified several critical issues currently facing the cancer community:
- Access: More than four out of five cancer patients and oncologists use the Internet to research cancer-related issues. However, only one in 25 patients has access to technology resources at their
treatment centers.
- Information Management: 70 per cent of cancer patients and oncology professionals alike are looking for technology tools that will help them better use the cancer-related information they receive.
- Support: Nearly nine out of 10 cancer patients want an online resource to notify them of new treatment options – more powerful technology-based support networks are needed.
AMD and LAF are working together to bridge these gaps and find other ways technology can benefit cancer survivors.
Making a Difference
Every year nearly 10 million people around the world join the more than 25 million already living with cancer.* 1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men will battle cancer in their lifetime.** By 2020, cancer rates could increase by as much as 50 percent, to 15 million new cases each year.***
Along with the efforts of countless experts and disciplines, enhancing quality of life for those affected by cancer also demands the very best technologies available. With research, applied knowledge and a collaborative effort, we can make a difference.
People affected by cancer need knowledge and access – whether seeking information on a clinical trial, staying in touch with family and friends or searching for doctors and treatment options. It is the responsibility of technology leaders, non-profits and the medical industry to work together to find a way to deal with this disease. Together with the LAF, AMD is helping the cancer community make significant strides.
AMD and the Lance Armstrong Foundation
World-class organizations can make great things happen. That's why AMD and the LAF have united to explore innovative ways to focus new and existing technology in a way to help people affected by cancer worldwide.
By combining the latest information technology with deep understanding of issues surrounding cancer research and survivorship, AMD and LAF are working to increase patient, family and healthcare provider access to crucial treatment and diagnosis information.
AMD is currently working with its leading technology partners to develop solutions that address access, information management and support issues facing the cancer community.
AMD will deploy AMD processor-based systems and technology counsel into the LAF's LIVE STRONG ™ Survivorship Center of Excellence Network and affiliated cancer treatment centers.
By doing so, we hope to better understand the role that technology can fulfill in helping people living with cancer.
With improved data access and better interaction and knowledge sharing opportunities among those confronting the disease, our efforts can strengthen the global commitment to making a difference in reducing the incidence of cancer and improving quality of life. What You Can Do
