AMD Suzhou: A Model of Environmental Protection Friday, May 25, 2007
AMD Suzhou was recently recognized for its EHS leadership by the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) Administration Committee. The SIP Administration Committee recognized AMD as the "SIP Model Enterprise of Environmental Protection" for the second year in a row, and also awarded AMD for its positive relationship with the SIP Environmental Protection Bureau—the regulatory body for environmental issues within the SIP.
The SIP is a 30-square-mile cooperative project between the Chinese and Singaporean governments that was designed to attract international business to Asia. Since opening in 1994, it has become one of China's most successful industrial areas, attracting dozens of Fortune 500 companies and billions of dollars in foreign investment. Alcatel, Fujitsu, Honeywell, Nokia, Panasonic, Philips, Siemens and Solectron are just a few of the big names in technology to have operations in the industrial park.
AMD Suzhou demonstrates its EHS leadership in many ways, including continually working to reduce its energy consumption. In 2006, AMD Suzhou engineers saved over 1,000 megawatt-hours of electricity by implementing such projects as enabling the facility's air compressors to be cooled by a central system instead of stand-alone cooling towers, installing a frequency inverter for process cooling water pumps, and optimizing temperature set points in both office and production areas.
