Summary of Legislative Activities
  • EU proposes legislation that restricts the use of Pb in electronic assemblies as part of a Directive on Waste in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).
  • Proposed Directive on Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) is separated from WEEE before submission of both proposals to the European Parliament.
  • First reading of proposed RoHS Directive in the European Parliament occurred in May 2001.
  • Second reading in the European Parliament occurred in April 2002.
  • Conciliation Committee was convened September 2002 and conciliation process was completed October 2002.
  • WEEE and RoHS directives published in February 2003.
  • Additional exemptions to RoHS adopted by Technical Adaptation Committee (TAC) in December 2004. Exemptions confirmed by TAC in March 2005 for submission to European Parliament.
  • Commission Decision 2005/747/EC to amend the Annex to the RoHS Directive, published in the Official Journal of the European Union, dated October 25, 2005, approved the additional exemptions.

Summary of Strategic Activities
  • Engaged in discussion with customers to ascertain the need for processor products that are compliant with RoHS requirements.
  • Exchanged information with partners and competitors in order to keep abreast of technologic and strategic changes.
  • Joined with industry and university consortia to explore issues and options for implementation of Pb-reduction programs.
  • Reviewed current package performance and manufacturability issues for compliance to RoHS requirements.
  • Aligned internal resources to address manufacturing changes.

Summary of Development Activities
  • Completed review of product compatibility with high temperature reflow profiles for RoHS-compliant manufacturing processes.
  • Determined best choices for materials for production of RoHS-compliant packaging.
  • Evaluated costs versus marketability of RoHS-compliant components.
  • Completed qualification of RoHS-compliant materials and processes in December 2004.
  • Transition to RoHS-compliant production occurred in July 2005.
