The Penang Community
AMD opened its first overseas test and assembly facility in Penang, Malaysia in 1972. At that time Penang was better known as an idyllic tourist retreat, but AMD recognized the potential of the community and its people and established AMD’s first offshore manufacturing site.

Today, the site manufactures products for both AMD and Spansion LLC, a company formed by the integration of AMD and Fujitsu Flash memory operations. The Penang site occupies 423,000 square feet in four buildings located in the hub of a high-tech electronic and electrical center near the international airport. The 1200 employees of AMD Penang and Spansion Penang perform assembly and testing operations on microprocessors and Spansion™ Flash memory products at world-class manufacturing facilities with class 100 and 10K clean rooms using highly automated, state-of-the-art equipment, and leading edge process technologies.

Community Impact
AMD and Spansion believe that companies cannot succeed without a successful community. Throughout the years, AMD Penang has made significant contributions to the community through charitable organizations, education projects, environmental commitment, and social welfare programs. In order to strengthen and enhance their community, company employees organized "Rakan Masyarakat (RAM)," a volunteer group that participates in community activities that assist people with disabilities, clean up the environment, and support education.

Education is a primary focus for community support because as Spansion Penang Managing Director Mohd Sofi says,” We believe that it is our responsibility to groom the next generation to unleash their full potential.” The site actively partners with schools and programs in the community that prepare young people for leadership, employment and higher education opportunities. Top-performing secondary school students are invited to tour the facilities and learn about careers in the semiconductor industry.

AMD and Spansion also make financial contributions and in-kind donations to support programs that address basic needs of the people in the community, make the community safer, and protect natural resources through recycling.

In 2003, contributions in the Penang community included the following:

  • Approximately $19,000 (USD) in financial contributions to area schools, government organizations and charity groups to support education, workforce development, health care and community programs
  • 1,100 hours of volunteer service by more than 100 employees
  • In-kind contributions of furniture and equipment valued at $500 (USD)
