The Austin Community

AMD opened the doors of its first chip manufacturing facility in Austin in 1979. Some 3,000 AMD employees call Austin home, making it the largest of AMD's global sites.

Austin is the headquarters for the Microprocessor Solutions Sector (MSS), which develops desktop, mobile, workstation, and server processors, x86 embedded processors, and consumer electronics.

Community Impact

As the 6th largest private employer in Austin, AMD makes a significant contribution to the local economy. In addition to employing thousands of Central Texans, AMD also has a substantial impact on retail sales, housing, local purchasing, and annual taxes. Moreover, AMD is committed to being a premier corporate citizen and a good neighbor in the community.

In 2003, AMD supported approximately 70 community-based organizations, schools, and universities in the Austin area. The total value of AMD’s local support exceeded $1,760,000.

  • $543,000 in contributions to support basic needs, community development, workforce development, and education programs
  • More than 550 employees worked over 2,000 volunteer hours in company-sponsored volunteer events
  • 599 pints of blood donations during company-sponsored blood drives
  • 9,500 personal volunteer hours outside of company-sponsored opportunities
  • In-kind contributions valued at more than $923,000 helped to ensure that local universities had access to high-tech teaching tools and that excess computers found new homes
  • AMD's Employee Giving Program contributed $263,338 to match Austin employees' gifts of time and money
