Living in Sunnyvale or Austin

Explore life in Sunnyvale, California—home to our corporate headquarters—and Austin, Texas.

Sunnyvale, California

Our headquarters are in Sunnyvale, California, located toward the southern end of the San Francisco Bay Area peninsula. This is the heart of Silicon Valley, and like many Silicon Valley companies AMD thrives on the culture of groundbreaking innovation that makes the Bay Area the center of the technology world.

But entrepreneurial culture is only one of many selling points of the Bay Area. The local climate is a nearly perpetual springtime upon which the extremes of summer and winter rarely intrude, and yet summer and winter pleasures are both available within driving distance. Two hours east of Sunnyvale are the Sierra Nevadas—the second-largest mountain chain in North America and home of legendary ski resort Lake Tahoe—and an hour south lies Santa Cruz, where the beaches provide sunlit warmth most of the year.

Head north and you hit San Francisco, with its world-famous historical charm, breathtaking downtown hills, and creative counterculture. And just beyond it, across the Golden Gate Bridge, lies beautiful Marin County and the Napa Valley vineyards.

The following links will help you explore the Bay Area in greater detail:

Austin, Texas

Austin, Texas is a city with a strong and growing reputation as one of the best places to live in the continental United States.

Certainly one reason for this is the forward-looking local economy, which is increasingly driven by the technology sector. Another is the area’s weather, which appeals to those who prefer sunshine to snow. Summer is a way of life for about half the year, and brutal winters quickly become a vague memory for many out-of-state residents.

Austin is also home to the University of Texas, one of the nation's largest universities and largest sites of graduate and undergraduate talent in the technology field. Students come from all over the world to study there, and quite often choose to remain in Austin after graduation. Texas has no state income tax, and real estate remains far more affordable than in many other technology centers.

Furthermore, Austin is a haven for creative professionals. Widely known as the “Live Music Capital of the World,” and home to the enormous South by Southwest music and film festival every year, Austin is a growing player in the world of filmmaking. Celebrated directors such as Robert Rodriguez and Richard Linklater —Austinites both—have shot movies in the Austin area.
