AMD Demonstrates Linux-based PDA at LinuxWorld

The flexibility of Linux-based OpenPDA from Metrowerks, combined with the AMD Alchemy™ Solutions Au1100™ processor represents a compelling new alternative for the PDA market

LINUXWORLD- San Francisco, Calif. -- August 5, 2003 --

AMD (NYSE: AMD) today demonstrates OpenPDA, a Linux technology-based software platform running on the latest version of the AMD Alchemy™ Solutions Mobile Handheld Reference Design Kit (RDK). This latest version of the RDK further demonstrates the unparalleled levels of functionality and portability enabled by the high-performance, low power, and highly integrated Au1100™ processor. When combined with the OpenPDA software suite, this platform represents a compelling new alternative for the PDA market.

The OpenPDA suite from Metrowerks is a comprehensive software solution for creating PDAs and other wireless network-connected computing devices. OpenPDA enhances innovative hardware designs with outstanding software for productivity, entertainment and personal information management functionality. The software platform includes an embedded Linux kernel, Trolltech’s Qtopia multi-language user interface, esmertec’s Jeode Java Virtual Machine (JVM), and the Opera software full-featured Web browser. Extended capabilities such as desktop synchronization utilities and mobile networking are also included. The OpenPDA Development Studio, a comprehensive system level development package, is now available from Metrowerks with support for the Au1100 processor.

The Mobile Handheld RDK running OpenPDA provides designers an example of a powerful, multimedia PDA hardware and software solution with a host of standard applications including: multimedia player, games, voice recording, image viewer, synchronization, browsing, and Java technology. In addition, OpenPDA provides a full Personal Information Management (PIM) suite that includes calendar, contacts, to do list, e-mail, and text editor programs.

LinuxWorld attendees can see the demonstration at BOOTH # 647, August 5 – 7.
