AMD Opteron™ Processor Wins HPCwire Editor's Choice Award

PHOENIX, AZ -- November 19, 2003 --AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced at Supercomputing 2003 the AMD Opteron™ processor has been awarded the HPCwire Editor’s Choice award for Vendor Delivering Most Innovative HPC Technology for 2003.

“The readers and editors of HPCwire are looking for groundbreaking advances in technology that benefit high performance computing,” said Tom Tabor, publisher of HPCwire. “The AMD Opteron processor has certainly energized the field of high performance computing in both the research and commercial markets, with a unique set of architectural features that improve the performance of a clustered computer system.”

In the high performance computing (HPC) field, where thousands of processors can be linked together to perform critical and intensive data calculations, the AMD Opteron processor provides improved data throughput, reduced memory latency and vast scalability.

“Our focus with the AMD Opteron processor has been to provide a tangible, significantly improved option in the server market,” said David Rich, director of High Performance Computing at AMD. “The HPC community has historically been at the forefront of computing technology and it’s gratifying to have their support and enthusiasm endorsing AMD’s direction in delivering innovative, customer-focused products.”

About the AMD Opteron™ Processor
The AMD Opteron processor is based on AMD’s eighth-generation processor core, which marked the introduction of the industry’s first 64-bit, x86 technology implementation. This technology preserves companies’ investments in 32-bit applications, while allowing a seamless transition to 64-bit computing as those companies require. The AMD Opteron processor is designed to deliver high-performance server and workstation solutions for today’s most demanding enterprise applications. The processor is scalable, reliable and compatible, which can result in lower total cost of ownership. Key AMD Opteron processor innovations include an integrated memory controller, which reduces memory bottlenecks, and HyperTransport™ technology, which increases overall performance by removing or reducing I/O bottlenecks, increasing bandwidth and reducing latency.
