AMD President and COO Hector Ruiz Inducted into Hispanic Hall of Fame
Honor Celebrated at Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference
EL PASO, TEXAS -- October 16, 2000 --Friday evening, AMD President and Chief Operating Officer Hector Ruiz was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference (HENAAC) in El Paso, Texas.
Each year, HENAAC honors the contributions of outstanding Hispanic American science and technology professionals. From prior years' award winners, a select few are chosen for the HENAAC Hall of Fame, a distinction designed to recognize world class levels of achievement. This is the second consecutive year Dr. Ruiz has been honored by the organization. Last year, Dr. Ruiz was chosen as the HENAAC Hispanic Engineer of the Year.
"I am honored to be inducted into the HENAAC Hall of Fame this year," said Ruiz. He added, "The important work of the HENAAC organization helps us all to recognize and appreciate the significant contributions Latinos make across a wide variety of professions."
George Fisher, chairman of the board of Eastman Kodak Company, applauded Dr. Ruiz's induction. "As someone who has known Hector for many years, I'm pleased to see him recognized for this prestigious honor and to know that his hard work and perseverance are being rewarded. From his earliest days, Hector always brought a distinctive level of excellence to everything he did. Today, as a result of that dedication, he has become a highly respected leader in the high tech world. For that, he deserves our admiration and respect - and accolades like this one."
"Dr. Ruiz's record of success, both personally and professionally, is a terrific role model for future generations of Hispanic engineers," said Ray Mellado, founder of HENAAC. "Hector had to overcome tremendous adversity and many challenges when coming to this country from his native Mexico. Through his talent and perseverance, he's compiled an impressive record of technical achievements, and has become a recognized leader in the highly competitive semiconductor industry. He's certainly deserving of this honor."
The mission of the HENAAC Hall of Fame is to recognize and celebrate extraordinary achievement among its inductees as they inspire the next generation of leaders and instill pride in the Hispanic community by contributing to the advancement and betterment of society. To be considered, HENAAC Hall of Fame candidates must meet the highest standards of excellence in their field and their contributions must significantly impact the Hispanic community. The list of Hall of Fame members' accomplishments is diverse and includes engineers, astronauts, physicists, as well as a Nobel Prize-winning chemist. Currently, there are 16 members of the HENAAC Hall of Fame. This year, Dr. Ruiz was inducted along with Dr. George Castro, a physical chemist and associate dean, College of Science, at San Jose State University.

The Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference organization was founded in 1988 by Ray Mellado. Its mission is to seek out, recognize, honor, and document Hispanic excellence in science and technology nationwide. Each year, the conference brings together students and professionals from the corporate, government, and academic sectors to showcase the value of success through education.
