AMD's Home Networking Products First to Achieve European Certification
AMD Enables OEMs to Gain International Certification
Sunnyvale, CA -- November 22, 1999 --AMD today announced that its PCnet-Home™ controller is the first Home Phoneline Networking Alliance (HomePNA) compliant product to receive European CE certification. European CE certification allows AMD's customers to promote and market their HomePNA products using the PCnet-Home or HomePHY™ devices in 19 European countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
The PCnet-Home controller, a single chip device that allows users to link multiple PCs together over standard telephone wiring without impacting telephone services, is the industry's first product to meet the widely endorsed HomePNA technology specification. Home networking permits PC users to access data, peripherals and the Internet from any phone outlet in the home. The PCnet-Home controller includes all of the hardware and software required for PC or peripheral manufacturers to quickly bring to market inexpensive phoneline networking devices based on the HomePNA specification. The HomePHY device provides HomePNA physical layer connectivity for set-top boxes, home gateways, Internet appliances, and many other applications. Both devices are shipping in volume.
"Achieving European CE certification is another significant milestone for AMD's home phoneline networking solutions," said Dr. Laila Razouk, Vice President of the Network Products Division at AMD. "We are extremely pleased with the acceptance of the PCnet-Home controller and HomePHY physical layer device and the amount of global industry activity surrounding HomePNA networking solutions. The certification will create a major new marketplace for home phoneline networking. AMD is thrilled to be leading this effort," Razouk said.
The European CE certification consists of three tests: CTR21 two-wire telephony equipment test, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) test, and a safety test. Certification is awarded when a product passes all three tests. The tests ensure that all home phoneline networking devices meet European standards with regard to electromagnetic interferences and do not compromise existing telecommunications systems.
To further expand home networking in Europe, AMD has developed a CD-ROM to enable its customers to achieve European CE certification. The CD-ROM contains all the information OEMs using the PCnet-Home controller or HomePHY physical layer device need to certify their HomePNA product. The CD is offered free of charge to AMD's customers.
The PCnet-Home controller is featured in consumer home networking products including Diamond Multimedia's HomeFree Phoneline Network Kit, Linksys' HomeLink Phoneline Network Kit, and Actiontec's ActionLink Home Networking Kit. The HomePHY device is featured in Tut Systems' Ethernet-to-HomePNA adapters and the AMD EasyNow!™ platform design.
