AMD and Computer Associates to Enhance Management of Networked Desktops

--Unicenter TNG's Support of AMD's New AlertIT™ Technology Helps Reduce Total Cost of Ownership, Increase Network Uptime--

SUNNYVALE, CA and ISLANDIA, NY -- December 7, 1998 --AMD and Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) today announced plans to provide support for AMD's new AlertIT™ system management technology that simplifies and extends the capabilities of an enterprise network administrator, helping lower the total cost of ownership for connected PCs. Through a coordinated effort, the solution is made possible by AMD's AlertIT and CA's Enterprise/CSi (Configuration Standardization Initiative). CA's Enterprise/CSi enables automated policy-based "hands-free" management of desktops and servers across heterogeneous environments. AMD's AlertIT technology allows network administrators to remotely monitor the configuration and operation of various hardware components in every PC on the network -- even if the PC is powered off or has no operating system running.

AlertIT technology is the latest enhancement to AMD's Managed Performance Portfolio of hardware, software, and firmware solutions that improve network performance and system manageability to help lower a PCs total cost of ownership. To provide seamless management, AMD and CA plan to make the AlertIT technology fully support Unicenter TNG's management infrastructure. AMD's AlertIT technology is supported in the Am79C975 PCnet™ -FAST III controller, a fully integrated, 10/100 Mbps physical layer and media access controller that is currently sampling.

"The combination of Unicenter TNG and AMD's AlertIT technology gives systems administrators the management capabilities needed to keep today's demanding enterprise computing environments functioning smoothly," said Ken Farber, CA senior vice president of strategic business alliances. "Computer Associates has consistently supported AMD's management innovations, such as their Magic Packet™ technology for remote system wake-up, and we plan to continue supporting the extended management features that AMD builds into its products."

"Extending our relationship with Computer Associates, the leading enterprise management software vendor, helps ensure that network administrators have access to the advanced management functionality AMD integrates into its networking devices," said Laila Razouk, vice president of the Network Products Division at AMD. "Supporting extended management functionality at the silicon level is a top priority for the next-generation integrated controller AMD plans to introduce during the first half of 1999."

AMD has been offering CA's Unicenter TNG Framework as part of its Managed Performance Portfolio since April 1998. The Unicenter TNG Framework helps AMD provide its customers with a complete hardware and software solution that includes the tools required by network administrators to carry out crucial management functions, such as auto discovery, hands-free management, scheduling and virus protection.

AlertIT Technology
AMD's AlertIT technology builds from industry standard technologies -- such as the Inter-IC (I2C) and System Management Bus (SMBus), the Desktop Management Interface (DMI) and the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) -- to offer new levels of management capabilities that help network administrators minimize network downtime. AlertIT technology is a hardware and software solution that automatically alerts system administrators of potential system problems before they occur or changes to a networked system. Key features and benefits of the technology include:

  • Immediate access to remote system information such as operating parameters or potential hardware failures or system configuration changes. This information can help reduce life-cycle maintenance costs by minimizing the need to visit individual desktops for various housekeeping tasks;
  • Capability to send automatic alerts when remote PCs begin to have problems. This capability enhances remote accessibility and overall manageability of networked systems;
  • Automatic alerts that warn network administrators when systems are tampered with or altered -- whether during normal operation or while powered-down -- thereby providing 24-hour security.
