DATUS Selects AMD ElanSC400 Microcontroller for New Microsoft® Windows® CE 2.0-Compatible Mobile Device

DATUS Selects AMD ElanSC400 Microcontroller for New Microsoft® Windows® CE 2.0-Compatible Mobile Device

LAS VEGAS -- January 7, 1998 --AMD today announced that its ElanSC400 processor has been selected to power the world's first all-in-one portable car navigation system from DATUS, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Daewoo Telecom.

Equipped with a built-in satellite receiver, the DATUS RouteFinder PNA (Portable Navigation Assistant) uses the GPS (Global Positioning System) developed for the Department of Defense in the 1970s. The GPS consists of 24 satellites orbiting Earth indicating the position of each satellite at a specific time. The RouteFinder PNA uses this information to locate instantly and display a driver's position with a digital map on a 4.1-inch screen.

When a destination address is entered into the device, it calculates the best route and guides the driver to the destination with voice instructions using a built-in speaker. As the driver approaches each recommended turn, the device provides real-time audio instructions until the destination is reached. While en route, the device displays the current street and instruction and the next instructions for the driver. Operators may also switch to a map view to view the car's current position.

"The ElanSC400 was selected for its unique combination of performance, software compatibility and power management which are critical to the market success of mobile systems," said Mike Higgins, director of marketing for DATUS, Inc. "No other processor offered the performance, scalability and value of the ElanSC400. AMD's advanced technology, experienced support team and volume manufacturing capabilities were also key factors in our decision."

"Microsoft applauds DATUS' commitment to the Windows® CE platform," said Harel Kodesh, general manager, consumer appliance group at Microsoft. "With support from companies like DATUS and AMD, the Auto PC will put the full power of Windows into consumers' hands allowing them to communicate in new ways while driving in their automobiles."

The ElanSC400 device is the only PC/AT-compatible microcontroller that addresses the design needs of handheld applications. It combines system peripheral integration and key mobile computing peripherals to provide a single-chip solution in an ultra-small, 292-ball grid array (BGA) package. The core feature set has an Am486® CPU core with an integrated memory controller, PC/AT system logic and essential mobile computing peripherals including a Power Management Unit, a dual PC Card slot controller, an LCD graphics controller, an IrDA infrared port and power management features.

The RouteFinder PNA will be available in production quantities in May. It will be distributed by OEMs, consumer electronics retailers, automotive aftermarket channels and value-added resellers. Although expected to retail for less than $1,000, final pricing has not been determined.

"The RouteFinderPNA will save significant time and money for commercial deliveries, limousine and airport shuttle services and business travelers," Higgins said. "It also serves families who can take advantage of added security, portability and time savings while shuttling children between various activities."
