AMD Announces 100-Nanosecond 1.8-Volt Flash Memory Device
AMD Announces 100-Nanosecond 1.8-Volt Flash Memory Device
SUNNYVALE, CA -- August 24, 1998 --AMD today announced the newest member of its 1.8-volt-only flash memory family -- the Am29SL800C. This 8Mb device has read access times of 100 nanoseconds, making it the industry's fastest 1.8-Volt flash memory device.
"The Am29SL800C's combination of low energy consumption and high-performance provides the best solution for systems requiring extended battery life," said Walid Maghribi, group vice president of AMD's Memory Group. "It is two to three times faster than competitive 1.8-Volt devices with a speed that is comparable to most 3.0-Volt devices.
"The Am29SL800C was designed to fully utilize AMD's high performance CS39LS process technology, a derivative of the current 0.32-micron CS39S process. This innovation will allow us to greatly improve the performance of all of AMD's flash devices," continued Maghribi.
Applications
AMD's 1.8-volt-only flash devices are ideal for digital cellular handset manufacturers, as well as other handheld applications such as pagers, personal information devices, and global positioning systems (GPS).
Am29SL800 Overview
- 1.8-volt-only Operation for Read, Program and Erase
--Lowers overall system cost and energy consumption by eliminating the need for 2.7-Volt, 5.0-Volt and 12.0-Volt power supplies.
- 1.8V-2.2V Operating Range
--Allows battery-powered systems to operate longer between battery replacement or recharging cycles. Available in commercial, industrial and extended temperature ranges for use in a wide variety of applications.
- Zero-Power Operation
--During normal operation, most portable systems have many inactive periods. AMD's advanced power-management system automatically puts the device into sleep mode during these inactive periods, consuming virtually zero power. There is no latency when the system subsequently accesses the device.
- High Performance
--Read access time of 100 nanoseconds.
- Industry Standard Architecture
--Based on the same process technology and architecture as AMD's 2.7-volt-only flash devices.
- Easy upgrade from AMD's 2.7-Volt flash devices
- Identical sector architecture with sector protection
- Embedded algorithms
Package and Availability
Samples of the Am29SL800C are available now. The price for the 100-nanosecond device is $6.50 in 10,000-piece quantities. Package options for the device include a 48-pin TSOP and 48-ball Fine Pitch BGA (FBGA). FBGA provides the optimum chip scale package solution for flash memory. |
