AMD Sponsors First Professional Computer Gamers League

SUNNYVALE, CA -- October 15, 1997 --AMD today announced it is the title sponsor of the AMD Professional Gamers League (PGL), the first professional league for competitive online computer gaming. The inaugural AMD PGL season begins on November 3 with a press conference and qualifying match at 3COM Park at Candlestick Point.

AMD joins TEN (Total Entertainment Network), Ziff-Davis and other sponsors in producing this new professional sports entertainment concept. The PGL is a fully structured professional league with star players, individual and team competition, referees, spectators, sponsors, and endorsements. A governing board and a PGL commissioner will be introduced at the launch event.

"The AMD PGL is an ideal venue for AMD to showcase its AMD-K6™ MMX™ enhanced processor," said Dana Krelle, director of marketing for AMD's Computation Products Group. "The computer gaming enthusiast is a power user who demands high performance, reliability and compatibility from his or her PC. Just as we are committed to providing the consumer the best performance for the price, AMD is also committed to provide the best platform for computer gaming, both now and in the future."

With more than $250,000 in cash and prizes in its first year, the PGL is expected to attract the best of the computer gamers. The inaugural PGL season will feature two game categories, Action (represented by id Software's Quake) and Strategy (Westwood Studio's Command & Conquer: Red Alert). Additional games and game genres will be added in the second, and subsequent, seasons.

"We're extremely excited to have AMD on board as the PGL title sponsor," said Erik Lundberg, executive producer of the PGL. "The relationship gives AMD exposure to computer gamers, who are known as early technology adopters and power users. These are influential users who understand the benefits of AMD's leading edge technology.

"AMD also brings significant resources to the league, which will help make the AMD PGL the leading brand for competitive multiplayer computer gaming world wide," he added.

To participate in the PGL, players must subscribe to the TEN service and register for the PGL at www.pgl.net. The web site will also post player profiles, interviews, event schedules as well as game highlights.
