--2.2-Volt-only Flash Memory--
SUNNYVALE, CA -- February 24, 1997 --AMD today announced the first zero-power flash product, the Am29LL800. With 2.2 volt read and write operation, it is the industry's lowest-voltage, highest-performance flash device.
AMD's Am29LL800 extends the operating time of handheld, battery-powered products because the device consumes approximately 50 percent less power than 3.3-volt devices.
"AMD is committed to leading this industry with the most advanced, low-voltage products. Today's announcement of the Am29LL800 zero-power flash is the next step in AMD's evolution toward 1.8- and 0.9-volt-based systems," said Walid Maghribi, vice president and general manager of AMD's Non-Volatile Memory Division. "To help spur the growth of the handheld, battery-powered market, AMD is offering the Am29LL800 at no additional premium over the equivalent 2.7-volt product."
2.2-Volt Flash Applications
The Am29LL800 addresses a broad base of new portable, battery-powered applications such as next-generation digital cellular phones and handheld organizers. In addition to low energy consumption, 2.2-volt read and write operation enables users to add an increasing number of features for emerging applications such as portable digital voice recorders, digital cameras and two-way pagers.
Zero-Power Flash
During normal operation, most portable systems have many inactive periods. AMD's unique power management system automatically puts the device into sleep mode during these inactive periods, consuming virtually zero power.
Other standard features include:
- Single-Supply Operation for Read and Write:
- Eliminates the cost, power consumption and reliability issues associated with DC-to-DC converters required for dual-voltage flash devices.
- Extended 2.2- to 2.7-volt Operating Range
- Allows battery-powered systems to operate longer between battery replacement or recharging cycles.
- Single-power-supply operation for all read, program and erase operations.
- Available in commercial and industrial temperature ranges.
- High Performance
- 150 nanoseconds access time -- the fastest in the industry.
- Industry-Standard Architecture
- Based on the same process technology and architecture as AMD's 2.7-volt-only flash devices.
- Easy upgrade from AMD's 2.7-volt flash devices
- Sector Architecture with Sector Protection
- Embedded Algorithms
- 100,000 Program/Erase Cycle Endurance
