HP and AMD Win EPA Energy Star Award for Technological Innovation in Energy-Saving Personal Computers

--All Commercial and High-performance HP Vectra PCs Include the Power-saving Technology --

PALO ALTO, CA -- March 24, 1997 --Hewlett-Packard Company and AMD will receive the 1997 Energy Star award for best technological innovation from the US. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tonight in Washington. The award recognizes HP and AMD for Magic Packet™ technology, developed jointly by the two companies, as well as for HP's NightDIRECTOR, which builds on Magic Packet technology. These innovations allow a network administrator to remotely "wake up" a PC on a network for off-hours maintenance, and then return the machine to the power-off mode, thereby saving energy.

"This is only the second time in the past three years that the EPA has presented this award," said Andrew Fanara, program manager of the EPA ENERGY STAR Office Equipment program. "We were extremely pleased to see two industry leaders collaborate to advance the development and adoption of this environmentally friendly technology."

Prior to the development of Magic Packet and other remote power-on technologies, network managers who wanted to do administrative back-ups or software upgrades over the network outside of normal business hours often instructed users to leave their PCs on 24 hours a day, increasing energy consumption.

All of HP's commercial and high-performance network-ready HP Vectra PCs include the capability to power on or off a PC remotely. Network administrators can take advantage of this feature by using HP NightDIRECTOR to power-down.

"We are very pleased to receive what we see as the most important EPA award," said Jean-Charles Miard, general manager for HP's Performance Desktop Computing Operation. "HP's engineers are continually striving to make HP Vectra PCs more energy efficient, and this technological innovation award is really a tribute to their great work."

"Working with leading PC manufacturers such as HP, AMD has been able to advance the state of the art in power management through semiconductor technology," said Bob Krueger, AMD's vice president for networking products. "Underlying silicon technology is integral to the energy-efficiency of PCs, so we are glad that the EPA recognizes our contribution."

ENERGY STAR awards are a part of an EPA program to encourage electronics manufacturers to produce energy-efficient products. HP Vectra PCs meet the EPA's criteria for low-energy consumption.

HP offers a broad family of industry-standard PCs in its commercial and performance HP Vectra PC lines recognized for excellence in reliability, quality and environmental responsibility. Products range from the entry-level Vectra VE, midrange Vectra VL and the advanced Vectra VA PCs for professionals using business applications, to the powerful high-performance Vectra XA, Vectra XU and Vectra XW PC workstations for the most demanding commercial and technical users.
