AMD Sponsors Microsoft Professional Developers Conference
AMD Sponsors Microsoft Professional Developers Conference
AUSTIN, TEXAS -- September 15, 1997 --AMD today announced it will join other global companies in sponsoring the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in San Diego, Calif., Sept. 22-26. The conference is a four-day event designed to educate software developers on the Microsoft tools and applications available to build applications for the next generation of the Windows operating system.
In sponsoring the PDC, AMD will highlight its ongoing commitment to the software developer community and will promote its campaign "Check your CPUID for AuthenticAMD." With the success and acceptance of AMD's K6™ MMX™ enhanced processor, the independent software vendor (ISV) community has recognized the value of x86 alternative processor technology in creating a new generation of computing applications. The CPUID instruction provides complete information about the processor (vendor, type, name, etc.) and its capabilities (features). After identifying processor and its capabilities, software can take advantage of available processor performance and features.
"We are excited to have AMD as a participating sponsor for the Professional Developers Conference," said Tod Neilsen, general manager, developer relations and platform marketing at Microsoft Corp. "This event is a unique opportunity to see AMD reinforce its support for the ISV community by sharing the value of the AMD-K6 processor with the developers."
AMD has a long history of delivering compatible processor solutions for personal computing, having shipped more than 100 million x86 processors since 1982, including 50 million Windows-compatible CPUs in the last five years.
"The ISV community has enthusiastically accepted the AMD-K6 processor and endorsed its high performance capability," said Ned Finkle, director of AMD's Strategic Initiatives Group. "Our recent design wins with top tier OEMs including IBM, Acer and DIGITAL have increased our presence in the marketplace and emphasized the importance of helping software developers understand and use the CPUID instruction, so their software takes full advantage of the AMD-K6 processor."
AMD is a previous sponsor of the Microsoft PDC, an event that will be attended by 6,000 professional software developers. Microsoft combined the annual Site Builders Conference and the former PDC to create the four-day conference. The PDC includes a variety of general and specialized information sessions, supplemented by several practical opportunities, including offering an on-site Communications Network, Interactive Hands-On Theaters and an Ask the Experts session.
The goal of the conference is to reach highly skilled and experienced software developers who use C++, Visual Basic and Java to develop Windows applications and to educate them on the Microsoft platform strategy, which includes developing with Win32 and Component Object Model (COM). The content focus will cover new advances in the Windows NT version 5.0 operating system and Microsoft Internet Explorer and other web application and programming services.
