Gateway 2000 Chooses AMD's Magic Packet™ Technology for Remote Network Management Capability
Award-Winning Magic Packet Technology Enables Remote Wake-up in Gateway's Just-Announced Low-Cost Networked PC
SUNNYVALE, CA -- September 2, 1997 --AMD today announced it is supplying remote wake-up and Fast Ethernet capabilities for a member of Gateway 2000's E-1000 Series of low-cost, networked PCs for enterprise computing.
AMD's PCnet™-FAST single-chip Ethernet controller provides PCs and NetPCs with a high-bandwidth connection to the network, as well as the remote wake-up capabilities demanded by today's corporate users. The remote wake-up capability is enabled by Magic Packet™ technology, co-developed by AMD.
"Gateway's just-announced E-1000 sets a new standard for price and performance for enterprise users," said Gary Smerdon, director of product marketing at AMD's networking division. "We are happy that Gateway chose AMD's Magic Packet technology to help them produce systems that reduce the cost of ownership and provide increased functionality for their corporate customers."
Magic Packet technology lets network administrators turn on PCs remotely for management tasks such as software upgrades and file back-up. By giving network administrators the ability to remotely power-on users' PCs from a central location after normal working hours, Magic Packet technology helps companies reduce TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) by reducing user downtime, increasing productivity and saving energy. In a corporate environment with thousands of PC users, this can add up to significant savings.
Awards
AMD and its co-developer received the 1997 Energy Star award for best technological innovation from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The award recognizes AMD and its co-developer for Magic Packet Technology.
