Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology Selects Cray XT3 Computer System to Accelerate Scientific Research

SEATTLE, WA -- April 6, 2005 --Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. (NASDAQ: CRAY) today announced that the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) has selected the new Cray XT3™ massively parallel processing (MPP) system as the main system for its high-performance computing facility.

JAIST, one of Japan's premier academic research centers, will use the new computer system to speed advances in the development of new algorithms for massively parallel computers, large-scale simulations and visualization in nanotechnology and biomechanics, and computational science.

Cray will install the Cray XT3 system with 372 AMD Opteron™ processors at the JAIST facility near Kanazawa City, Ishikawa, Japan.

"The excellent scalability features and highly balanced system design of the Cray XT3, as well as its excellent price-performance, were our main reasons for selecting this system," said Teruo Matsuzawa, Ph.D, director of the JAIST Center for Information Science and manager of JAIST's supercomputer facility. "Over the past decade, JAIST has built considerable expertise in massively parallel algorithms and applications. The Cray XT3 system suits our needs perfectly."

"The JAIST faculty and the Center for Information Science have exceptional expertise in large-scale parallel computing and a broad portfolio of highly parallel applications. We are excited to announce JAIST as our first major Cray XT3 customer in Japan," said Mamoru Nakano, president of Cray Japan.

The Cray XT3 computer system is designed to run very challenging, high-end scientific research and engineering applications with superior scalability, performance and reliability. The processors are connected via an innovative, high-speed internal network.

About JAIST
Founded in 1990, the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) was the first national university in Japan to focus exclusively on graduate-level training and research. Organized into three departments (information science, materials science, and knowledge science), JAIST provides up-to-date graduate training for up to 600 students while maintaining competitive research programs through various dedicated centers, such as technical computing, nanotechnology and information security. Safe Harbor Statement
This press release contains forward-looking statements. There are certain factors that could cause Cray's execution plans to differ materially from those anticipated by the statements above. These include the technical challenges of developing high performance computing systems, government support and timing of supercomputer system purchases, the successful porting of application programs to Cray computer systems, the successful passing of acceptance tests, reliance on third-party suppliers, fluctuating quarterly operating results, lower margins and earnings due to significant pricing pressure, Cray's ability to keep up with rapid technological change, Cray's ability to compete against larger, more established companies and innovative competitors, and general economic and market conditions. For a discussion of these and other risks, see "Factors That Could Affect Future Results" in Cray's Annual Report on Form 10-K filed with the SEC on April 1, 2005.
