Jerry Sanders Honored By University of Illinois - Six Engineers Receive Prestigious University Alumni Award

Urbana, IL -- March 7, 2002 --Gerald T. Marcyk (BSEE '73, MSEE '76, PhD '78), Andrew R. Neureuther (BSEE '63, MSEE '64, PhD '66), Jack L. Saltich (BSEE '66, MSEE '67), W.J. "Jerry" Sanders III (BSEE '58), Joseph T. Verdeyen (PhD '62), and Ping Yang (MSEE '78, PhD '80) will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in a ceremony on Friday, March 8, in Champaign. Established 32 years ago, this award recognizes ECE alumni who have made professional and technical contributions that bring distinction to the department and the university.

Chairman and CEO of Advanced Micro Devices in Sunnyvale, CA, Sanders is being honored for his visionary leadership at AMD and business acumen in the semiconductor industry. In 1969, Sanders and seven former colleagues from Fairchild Semiconductor founded Advanced Micro Devices. AMD has since become a leading U.S. based semiconductor manufacturer. Sanders received the Robert N. Noyce Award, the industry's highest honor for leadership, from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) in 1998, and in 2001 he joined a select group of high-tech leaders who have received the Medal of Achievement from the American Electronics Association, the nation's largest high-tech industry association.
