LG Electronics, NEC, Wyse, Tatung and FIC Will Preview Smart Display Devices Built on National Semiconductor’s Geode Reference Design at Comdex 2002
COMDEX, Las Vegas -- November 17, 2002 --At Comdex today, National Semiconductor (NYSE:NSM), a Microsoft Smart Display Technology Partner, will demonstrate the first wireless Smart Display devices developed by National’s major manufacturing partners, including LG Electronics Inc., NEC Electronics, Wyse Technology, Tatung Co. and First International Computer (FIC). The displays from all five companies are built on National’s Geode™ Smart Display reference design, which is speeding deployment of Smart Displays for customers and consumers.

Smart Display products from National’s partners will be previewed at press events Sunday and Monday, and at National’s meeting room (Room LN107, LVCC) during Comdex. Scheduled for an official launch in early 2003, Smart Displays --- wireless touch-screen monitors --- are designed to extend the Windows XP experience to any room in the home. They feature the hardware and consumer expertise of each manufacturer as well as the high performance and longer battery life benefits of National’s reference design.
“Smart Displays extend the Windows XP experience, giving consumers instant access to their PCs in any room in the home at any time,” said Keith White, senior director of the Embedded and Appliance Platforms Group at Microsoft. “National Semiconductor has developed a powerful reference design that will enable its partners to quickly and easily deliver Smart Displays into consumers’ hands.”
National Semiconductor’s Smart Display reference design incorporates the breadth of National’s technology expertise, enabling the highest performance, lowest power Smart Displays. At the core is National’s Geode processor, winner of Micro Design Resources’ 2001 Best Highly Integrated Processor, which in one chip incorporates the microprocessor, graphics and interfaces that can be used to drive a Smart Display device. The reference design also includes National’s industry leading power management, audio and display solutions. With a complete set of software, development platforms and reference schematics, National’s reference design provides a fast and low-risk path for device developers to quickly create their Smart Display products.
LG Electronics Inc. is one of National’s featured partners at Comdex. LG will demonstrate its M1500 Smart Display, a thin and light 15-inch primary detachable LCD monitor with 1024 x 768 XGA resolution that also features long battery life.

NEC Electronics, a worldwide leader in consumer electronics, will demonstrate a Smart Display with a 10.4-inch 800 x 600 SVGA resolution screen. The device will be launched initially in Japan in early 2003.
Wyse Technology, the worldwide leader in secure, managed thin clients, will present a remote mobile smart display that features an 8.4-inch 800 x 600 SVGA resolution screen and operates as a secondary monitor to a Windows XP-based PC. An original equipment manufacturer (OEM) will launch this product in the U.S. in early 2003.
Tatung Co., a leading design and manufacturing company in Taiwan, will demonstrate its TWN-5213 Smart Display with a 10.4-inch 800 x 600 SVGA resolution screen. An OEM will bring the TWN-5213 to market in early 2003.
FIC, a leading supplier for many of the industry’s PC brand names, will demonstrate its 15-inch 1024 x 768 SVGA resolution mobile Smart Display. An OEM will take this device to market in 2003.
Other partners of National Semiconductor are also developing Smart Display products that will be announced in early 2003.
