AMD Penang Celebrates 30th Anniversary, Honored By Malaysian Prime Minister

PENANG, MALAYSIA -- August 27, 2002 --AMD Penang said today that it will be honored by The Honorable Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia, on the 30th anniversary of AMD Penang’s arrival on the island.

AMD is one of eight “pioneer” electronics companies that established operations in Penang in 1972.

In a ceremony to be held today at the Hotel Equatorial Penang, The Honorable Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad will present AMD and other select electronics industry pioneers with the “High Tech Pioneer Penang” award.

“It is a great honor for AMD to have our local business efforts recognized by the Prime Minister,” said Ajay Marathe, AMD’s Vice President, Computation Products Group, Manufacturing Services Division. “Thirty years ago, AMD opened its first overseas facility here because of the enormous potential of the people of Penang. AMD Penang has been rewarded ever since, growing from 78 employees in 1972 to approximately1,300 today. Because of the warm relations we enjoy with the people of Penang and Penang State Government, we expect continued prosperity here.”

Throughout the day, AMD will be participating in a seminar entitled “Growing with Penang.” The seminar, which begins at 7:45am today at the Hotel Equatorial Penang, is organized by both the Penang Development Center and the eight pioneer electronics companies. “Growing with Penang” will review the importance and contributions of Penang’s electronics industry, share success models, identify challenges and strategies for the future, as well as provide feedback to government officials in an effort to help ensure the continued growth of the electronics industry in Penang.
