Company Success Stories - Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA)

Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) and the AMD Opteron™ processor deliver a flexible migration path to 64-bit computing

"Computer Associates, one of the largest software companies in the world, supports many hardware and software platforms with robust solutions such as its Advantage Ingres Enterprise Relational Database (RDBMS). Advantage Ingres is part of CA’s suite of information management solutions and is a proven relational database application with the broad scalability and integration required for large enterprises needing simplified database administration. - Emma McGrattan, CA divisional vice president"

Challenge
CA recognized more enterprises are interested in making the transition to 64-bit computing for improved performance and scalability of business applications without disrupting their investment in 32-bit infrastructure. Enterprise applications for business intelligence, Very Large Database (VLDB) and Data Warehouse require high-volume data access and can benefit enormously from 64-bit computing.

To address this need, CA worked closely with AMD to develop Advantage Ingres for the AMD64 platform and its server/workstation solution, the AMD Opteron™ processor. CA accomplished its goal of offering support for Advantage Ingres on the AMD64 platform on the day the processor was announced.

Solution
The AMD Opteron processor presented CA with a unique opportunity to extend the power of 64-bit computing, according to Emma McGrattan, CA divisional vice president, Research and Development.

“We were excited about working with AMD on a port of Advantage Ingres for the AMD Opteron processor,” McGrattan said. “We liked the fact that we can help our clients move to a 64-bit environment at their pace as well as giving them the capability to deploy their existing 32-bit applications on an AMD Opteron processor-based platform without changing a single line of code.”

AMD and CA joined forces to allow enterprise customers to maximize the value of their current technology investments and provide a transition to exploit the power of 64-bit computing as their business needs evolve. When CA’s development team tested Advantage Ingres on the AMD Opteron processor, the 32-bit version immediately ran faster in the 64-bit environment than on 32-bit hardware. This enabled CA to port just the modules that needed to access 64-bit file and memory capabilities.

The ease of porting provided by the AMD Opteron processor was considerable. It took only two days for Advantage Ingres to port to the AMD Opteron processor, whereas a comparable porting effort to other 64-bit platforms can take as long as a month.

Impact
The result of AMD’s work with CA is that Advantage Ingres release 2.6 on Linux offers significant performance improvements for users of VLDB applications on 32-bit systems. CA customers can deploy Advantage Ingres to exploit those 64-bit performance improvements while their existing applications run using the 32-bit compatibility feature of the AMD Opteron processor. Both CA and its customers can exploit the performance of both 64- and 32-bit processing modes immediately.

This also allows CA and its customers to selectively port solutions to 64-bit, depending on the need among its users for the power and performance offered by 64-bit computing. By limiting the processing mode port to those solutions and applications that directly derive benefit from 64-bit processing, a significant cost savings is achieved for CA and its customers.

With the combination of Advantage Ingres and the AMD Opteron processor, enterprises can look forward to a powerful data management infrastructure at a relatively low total cost of ownership.
