The high performance computing (HPC community has traditonally helped drive computer architecture and processor innovation, beginning with computer systems developed in the 1940s. to address defense and scientific applications. The initial stage of HPC processor use was recently based on proprietary processors, beginning with the first scientific processor designs and progessing through vector architectures and specialized processors from Massively Parallel Computers.
