SGI Announces Day One Support Of New Six-Core AMD Opteron™ Processors

SGI Increases Energy Efficiency and Optimizes Performance with AMD Six-Core Enabled Products

FREMONT, Calif. -- June 1, 2009 --SGI® (NASDAQ: SGI) announced today the immediate availability of servers based on the new Six-Core AMD Opteron™ processors (codenamed “Istanbul”). SGI will offer a wide selection of server models that will use the new Six-Core AMD Opteron processors to help increase energy efficiency, and ensure superior value and optimal performance for demanding, real-world server and workstation application workloads.

“These new Six-Core AMD Opteron processors continue AMD’s leadership in providing the hardware innovations that tackle demanding workloads with superior speed and efficiency,” said Giovanni Coglitore, senior vice president and chief products officer at SGI. “AMD’s energy-saving technologies can greatly benefit the price-performance-per-watt in an existing data center footprint and, together with SGI’s energy-saving server designs, help to greatly reduce overall power consumption.”

SGI servers with Six-Core AMD Opteron processors address core scale-out needs in Internet and high performance computing markets such as federal government, digital media, financial services, and oil and gas exploration. A wide variety of models supporting the new processors are available, spanning SGI’s server and storage product lines. Rack- and data center-level solutions are also available, ranging from ICE Cube™ modular data centers, CloudRack™ C2 enclosures to standard rack-mount products.

“AMD is excited to continue collaborating with SGI to deliver energy efficient, innovative technologies,” said Patrick Patla, vice president and general manager, Server and Workstation division, AMD (NYSE: AMD). “Our newest Six-Core AMD Opteron processors offer significant enhancements to our industry-defining microprocessor technology, including performance-per-watt enhancements and helping to decrease power consumption for the most complex server and workstation application workloads.”
