Moonlight Launches the World’s First software based 720p MPEG-2 Real Time Encoding Solution for AMD64 Technology-Based Systems

Moonlight’s MPEG-2 CODECs enable Video Editing and MPEG-2 Encoding and Transcoding at unprecedented speeds and resolutions - including real time 720p at the highest quality available when optimized for the AMD64 architecture.

Tel Aviv, Israel -- November 17, 2003 --Moonlight today announced support for AMD Athlon™ 64 and AMD Opteron™ processor-based systems with Moonlight’s industry leading MPEG-2 CODECs, offering unprecedented speeds and resolutions for both 32- and 64-bit AMD processors.

Highlights of the performance of Moonlight’s MPEG-2 and H.264 CODECs on AMD64 systems include full utilization of 3DNow!(tm) technology for efficient media processing. Also, Moonlight’s Elecard HDTV Player/Decoder, includes an innovative Interlaced to Progressive (I2P) module, outputting 50/60 progressive 1920x1080 frames out of 50/60 1920x540 fields. Moonlight also offers a Full D1 resolution H.264 player, running on both AMD Athlon 64 and AMD Opteron processor-based systems.

“Moonlight has always thought out of the box and challenged the status quo of the video compression industry”, said Ira Dvir, CEO of Moonlight. “We are pleased to work with AMD and their industry-leading AMD Athlon 64 and AMD Opteron processors, which will allow us to offer our customers even better performance for their video encoding and transcoding needs. Working with the AMD64 architecture allows us to do what we do best -- provide high quality soft video CODECs at maximum speeds, beating even the best hardware platforms, which can cost up to ten times more.”

“AMD is collaborating with companies like Moonlight to help deliver our shared vision of customer-centric innovation,” said Tim Wright, director, desktop business segment of AMD’s Microprocessor Business Unit. “With AMD64 processors and Moonlight’s high resolution real-time CODECs, customers will soon be able to experience HDTV visuals on their computers as HDTV capture cards become available.”

Moonlight plans to release final optimizations for the 64-bit Windows platform within three months, and will speed up the encoder by approximately 33%. This will enable very high bit-rate transcoding (full decode – full encode) of 720p.

Moonlight’s Alpha version of its H.264 Encoder will be released by the end of the year. This H.264 encoder with full D1 resolution will enable real DVD quality at less than 1Mbps, running on AMD Athlon 64 processors; thereby revolutionizing PC-PVRs as well as PC-Based Media Centers.
