Rackable Systems To Use Low-Power AMD Opteron™ Processors
Systems to reduce heat and improve total cost of ownership in the data center
Supercomputing Conference, Phoenix -- November 18, 2003 --Rackable Systems, a leading provider of large-scale data center server solutions, today announced plans to incorporate an upcoming line of low-wattage AMD Opteron™ processors into its server designs. Rackable Systems’ built-to-order compute servers will be available with 55- and 30-watt AMD Opteron 100-, 200- and 800-series processors when the models become available in 2004. Availability of the new chips complements Rackable Systems’ expanding suite of more power efficient and thermally optimized offerings—such as the Distributed DC Power technology introduced today—designed to reduce heat and improve reliability in complex data center environments.
Rackable Systems is seeing strong and increasing demand in 64-bit server platforms, including its AMD Opteron processor-based systems. Rackable Systems will enable its customers to select the new low-power AMD Opteron processors next year in the company’s patented back-to-back rack mount servers, which provide doubled CPU density, improved serviceability and superior remote management capabilities. Rackable Systems’ offerings are designed for deployment in a wide range of large-scale server farms, including those operated by high performance computing, Web serving and financial services organizations.
“Low-power processors are a requirement for many server clusters used in major computing deployments where heat and power consumption have a considerable impact on ease of deployment, total cost of ownership and system availability,” said Giovanni Coglitore, vice president, chief technology officer and founder, Rackable Systems. “The AMD Opteron processor’s high memory throughput and improved input/output bandwidth are ideal for our efficiency-focused server clusters,
which must quickly move and manipulate large amounts of data, while generating less heat and consuming minimum power.”

Rackable Systems will demonstrate systems featuring beta versions of the mid- and -low power AMD Opteron processors at this year’s Supercomputing Conference, Nov. 18-22, in Phoenix.
